Talking with family about budget

Laurel, on October 4, 2024 at 10:01 PM Posted in Planning 0 2
Hi I’m relatively new to this wedding wire. My fiancée and I have been engaged since Christmas 2022 and we’re getting married October 2025. We’ve been planning for a few month now. My in laws have offered to help financially and I’ll be honest, my own family, what’s left of it, did not talk about money, like it almost taboo. My mom in law has offered to write us a check but I said I’d like to meet with her and my father in law and my fiancee to talk about the wedding. The wedding is more of a micro wedding, and about $15000. My mom can’t contribute anything financially, my fiancée and I can pay for the vast majority but my in laws paid a lot of my brother in laws wedding and they want to help by paying as much as his. They did not want a say in my brother in law’s wedding and they don’t want a say in ours. Even so, I’m still very anxious/nervous because of my own family attitude about money. Any suggestions or thoughts? Thank you!!

What may be helpful is to tell them "hey, this isn't something that my family really talks about and it makes me anxious. I want everyone to be on the same page and we're grateful for your help." Then like ask them in what way they want to help, do they want to pay vendors directly or just give you money? It sounds like they just want to be generous without expectation which is wonderful!

Congrats to you! I don't think you really need to explain anything, if they want to give you a gift with no strings attached to help with the wedding that's very generous. Your family has no obligation to do the same and honestly it shouldn't even mentioned to them. If your fiancee asks about it I d simply say I don't anticipate a financial contribution from them at this time and leave it at that. Your fiancé can deal with the money discussions with his family if you aren't comfortable having those talks. Make sure to express your gratitude and try not to stress about it. Enjoy the special time in your life!
