Tattoos

Michaela, on August 7, 2019 at 4:09 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 23

My FH wants us to get tattoo-ed on our honeymoon. Not matching ones, just as an activity one day. His point is that it makes the tattoo even more special. But, I'm very hesitant.. We haven't booked our honeymoon yet, but we're looking at the resort type vacation. Do resorts have tattoo artists? Is it potentially dangerous, especially if it's in a different country? Would I still be eligible to give blood if I get tattooed, say, in Jamaica? Any other things I should take into consideration? I'm open to all thoughts, concerns, opinions on this matter!

Well in regards to giving blood, you can't give blood I believe it's a year after getting a tattoo. I have 6 tattoos. I would definitely research the place before you get one. Making sure they are clean(use new needles each time) is very important. But just know if you get a tattoo water activities are out. You can get serious infections. That includes pools, spas, and the ocean. Maybe wait until you get back from your honeymoon?

I would assume resorts would not have tattoo artists, but the surrounding towns would. If it were me, I would not get a tattoo in another country. Plus if it's a water/beach/lake honeymoon (like Jamaica), you wouldn't be able to get in the pool or bath or ocean for the rest of the trip. I believe there is a time period after you get a tattoo that you should wait before donating blood.

I would just wait until after you get back from your honeymoon to get it done, unless you get it done on the last day of your honeymoon as you wont be able to get wet. You are still able to donate blood, however will have to wait a year before being able to do so.

My husband wanted the same thing aha. So you can't give blood anyway after a tattoo for I believe it's A year according to red Cross. And I'd be mindful of if he's going to do that, then you're not doing any water activities because you can't get in water for two weeks or so after getting a tattoo so that may damper honeymoon activities.

In Vegas a hotel I stayed at had a tattoo shop in the hotel. But idk about other countries. As you would anything I would just research it. A concierge at the resort might help you find someone the locals like. But I would just suggest researching places wherever you’re going.

I didn't even think of the water aspect, thank you! That is a very helpful point to consider

You're welcome. I usually get my tattoos in the winter to avoid the water issue. I love the water haha

I have tattoos and do not reccomend it unless you're doing it on the very last day. Like mentioned you can't go near water, sand, it makes the area more prone to burns and sun can damage the tattoo. You'll need lotion on it for a few days and need to know beforehand if your skin tolerates the lotion. I would wait until you get back for tattoos.
I believe the American Red Cross is 1 year after a tattoo or piercing to donate blood.
You'd need to find a clean and reputable shop to get it done at which is harder in areas you're not familiar with, you won't likely see one in a resort.

I would just get something small. My aunt did this on a whim on the beach in Hawaii with a random tattoo artist. She got a tramp stamp - LOL.

For whatever reason FH is convinced that resorts would have them. But we are hiring a travel agent, so I will talk to them about this topic too

I’ve never heard of a resort with a tattoo artist. I definitely wouldn’t get tattooed somewhere else, but I’m also not a fan of getting tattooed by random people without researching them in general. If you’re going somewhere like Jamaica, you won’t be able to get in the ocean, pool, or have much sun exposure once you get tattooed. There’s a waiting period for donation no matter where the tattoo comes from.

Yes! I do have to add that I have literally zero clue on what I would get if we decided to do this. Something small and good placement as to not be totally uncomfortable while traveling back home!

If you're going to a resort and expect to get into any water, dont get a tattoo. A tattoo is technically an open wound and can get infected very easily especially with water borne bacteria. I would just wait until you get back home.

I would be very cautious with this. My cousin and her husband at the time went on a honeymoon in the Bahamas I think (sorry this was over 10 years ago). But they had tattoos done while down there. He ended up getting an infection from it. If you guys do want to get tattoos I would wait till you got home and go a place around you.

I’ve gotten tattoos in Thailand and Kenya with no issues - and cheaper than in the US. You just have to research places for legit reviews and make sure to see their work portfolio.

I would wait at least until after the honeymoon. You're not supposed to expose your tattoo to the sun or water right after getting it

Generally speaking, I don't get tattoos from random people or in random places. It's an art, so I stick to my tattoo artist or a reputable place I can research. I personally would not get a tattoo on vacation at a resort outside of the US unless I heavily researched it first. I have 8 for reference.

At least have your travel agent do some research or heavily Google it first. Honestly, it takes 2 weeks to heal and it's essentially an open wound. Do you want to be caring for that on vacation or traveling? Especially when airplanes are germs factories.

Why not consider getting one when you are back in the states. Maybe inspired by something in Jamaica. Take good pictures.

Yes, I agree. It's really my FH who wants to do this, I told him I would consider it. Everyone's comments have helped a lot!
