Unfortunately, in some States (California being one of them), service providers have to pay a tax to the State. In California the service tax rate is usually the same as the sales tax rate. I think the state figures that, as long as commerce is happening, they deserve a cut of it.

The problem I have is I'm for a service, that is then given a service charge, and BOTH the service and service charge or taxed!! I'm talking about paying sales tax on a 20% service charge on a service. This is not simply taxing a service, but taxing a service charge on a service! Boy they sure know how to stick to you don't they.

Here in VA they don't charge tax on the service charges... My florist had a major headache every time I changed my order because the tax was only on the actual flowers not on setup fees

All the venues I looked into in Southern Cal charge a mandatory 20-24% service charge plus 8.75% sales tax of course..on top of their outrageous prices of $110-300+ per meal to begin with! Yes biggest rip off ever.... I've never eaten a $300 plate of food in my life...our food better be damn good.

I totally agree it is a rip off, I had to ask my venue whether or not the tax was added before or after the service charge was added. I feel it's a guaranteed way that they get gratuity(service charge) whether or not the service warrants it and the tax we pay pays for their taxes.

"Cater it simple" has this right. Unfortunatley this is not the venue or vendors fault.

Depending on the laws of the state, service charge may fall under a taxable fee.

In some states, for buying stuff like Tupperware and such, you actually get taxed on the shipping, too. Such is true in my state, unfortunately. Now THAT is BS, in my mind.

They just recently started charging service tax here in Ohio.

My bridal salon told me to bring cash to pay for my gown being pressed so they won't have to charge me sales tax. I guess they just won't put it on their books. I really don't care lol.

Does anyone know the specifics of tax status of non-denominational Officiants in the state of Washington?

Is an ND Officiant exempt as a religious organization, or a non-profit, and does it make sense for an Officiant to incorporate as a business to write off expenses, etc.?

We're researching the situation to decide how best to position ourselves with regard to income vs. taxation. Thanks to any and all for advice.

Does Ohio collect sales tax on wedding officiant services or planning and coordinating services?
