Tea dying veil - success!

Alicia, on March 27, 2019 at 9:44 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 33

I knew from the start I didn't want to spend a lot of money on a veil, because I'm only wearing for the ceremony and a couple pictures, and I'm on a tight budget! I found one on Amazon that was $15 and worked well with my dress. The problem was that even though I ordered an "ivory" color, it was basically bright white, and my gown is a champagne/beige shade. After watched a few Youtube videos about tea dying veils, I decided to give it a try and figured if it didn't work, being out $15 wasn't the end of the world. It totally worked! The pictures don't capture the shade variance in the before and after well, but it's perfect. My mom and I checked it out with my dress last night, and it's the exactly perfect shade. If anyone wants to try it, I can give you the step-by-step that I did, but seriously, I am so excited with how perfectly it turned out! Yay for budget hacks that work!!

    1. Boil a large pot of water (if you have a stock pot, use that, I just used the largest pot I had).

    2. I steeped 6 black tea bags in the water for roughly 5 minutes or so, then removed.

    3. Let the tea cool to room temp.

    4. Rinse veil in cold water, make sure the entire thing is saturated. This will help the "dye" cover evenly.

    5. Soak veil in tea. Make sure the whole thing is covered. I just used my hands to hold it under the tea and would turn it every so often to make sure the whole thing was covered. I kept mine in the tea for 2 minutes, but I wasn't super concerned about it since it was so cheap. (You could always do less time and then repeat the process if it is still too light, as opposed to risking it getting too dark and not being able to do much with it.)

    6. Remove veil from tea and thoroughly rinse in cold water again.

    7. Hang to dry.

Other than waiting for the tea to cool, it took me about 5 minutes start to finish to complete the process!

I’m glad you posted this! I’ve been researching tea dying. I also got a cheap veil off amazon that is too white for my dress. Thanks for the success story!

Agreed! I think you could tell it was cheap before, but for whatever reason, the antique-y color made it look classier to me!

Omg I didn’t even know this was a thing! My dress is champagne and ivory as well and I also don’t want to spend a lot on a veil. I’m so looking into this!!

Along with Alicia's method maybe you could find a cheapy veil and just test it out then do your more expensive one??

That’s amazing!! I’m glad it worked out I also have the same problem I have a champagne dress and found it very hard to find a veil to match it. I settled on a $300 veil since I was able to see how it worked with my dress but I would love to try this and return the other veil.
