Lots of alcohol usually makes things look better. If you have that, you should be fine!

Here's my tip. Own it. If you are renting a space with an ugly ceiling, at least it will make sense to your guests who will be served home cooked crock pot weenies (whatever that is) and ham and cheese sandwiches. Don't even think about draping fabric from a ceiling that's covering a reception area with 80 - 100 people -- that you can't afford to feed properly.
