Hello, I just recently got engaged and have been thrown into the wedding chaos! I've been dreaming of my wedding since I was a little girl and can't wait for my day! However looking into budgets and venues and vendors overwhelms me! How do you afford it all!!! At this point we have decided to throw a pasture ranch wedding (we are cattle people) but don't want it to be cheap! I'm envisioning a tent wedding with chandeliers and lace! We have a doable budget and I know my FH will do everything he can to make it perfect (I really lucked out) but still terrifies me.

I've read alot of budget blogs but they seem to make it such a casual affair which is not what I want! Any brides out there who have planned or are planning a backyard tented wedding? Any advice on how to make it spectacular with out paying a large mortgage?

This is a bad plan in a million ways. Your tent, tables, chairs, linens, dancefloor, cooking stoves, port o sans misc stuff like bars and ice bins will cost you WAY more than you think. Your family should not be cooking anywhere, never mind in the middle of a field somewhere. Do you have any idea how hard that is? How unsafe it can be? You think you have chaos now?

    Just wait.

Where are you going to store all this food for all these people? What about the ice? For an outside wedding in the summer, we budget 10 lbs per person for icing down and in drinks.

Either hire a pro or find a venue because I can tell you right now, this is going to cost you more than you ever dreamed.

FutureWatson, thank you so much for your advice I truly needed it!!! I know that tent weddings aren't going to save us a lot but my fiancé only input was he wanted to get married at his family ranch so I have to respect that! Still researching venues for back up, thank you everyone for the advice!

It's easy, you wait. You save. The end.

No problem! City people are so detached from rural life they can't understand how resourceful we can be lol, especially ranchers! Not everything is readily available in small towns like it is in the cities.

Recently saw some photos of a ranch wedding where they said their vows, then hopped on their horses (in their tux and dress) and headed to the branding pen to do some work! I imagine that would give some people on here a heart attack! Smiley winking

While I agree a tent rental won't be cheap, and catering should be done by professionals (although you said your BIL is a pro? I imagine he has a team that will be doing most or all of the work on the wedding day?), there's absolutely no reason you can't save on everything else!

Ask a local church or group about renting tables and chairs, build your own dance floor (can possibly be sold after the wedding), etc, where there's a will, there's a way Smiley smile

FutureWatson yes it definitely is a different life! BIL has professional catering so don't know that he will be doing much just more of offering his services i.e. Team! My dad is actually building our dance floor from a barn we tore down with our brand stenciled in the center! Tables from church was a great thought and haybales for my ceremony! My plan is to just class it up with some flowers and chandeliers! Grand scheme of things I'm sweating the small stuff but need to remember that it's all about me and him!

Celia, I understand your skepticism and appreciate your tough questions to keep in mind. However my in laws live on the property so not like we have food out in the middle of nowhere. For drinks we use large metal horse tanks with ice and drinks and kegs. We use this tactic every year for branding season for 10 plus hours in 100+ degree heat! We chose June because it's not too hot yet and we can enjoy the weather! However we have decided to hire a partial wedding planner to get all of those nitty gritty details handled. Thank you for all your advice good or bad it's all appreciated to help me think through all of this!
