*Test Run* Best Ink for Thumbprint Guestbook

Courtney, on April 3, 2016 at 7:12 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 3

A few weeks back I posted a question asking about the best ink to use for my thumbprint guestbook. I did a few test runs and wanted to post my results b/c I thought it might help some brides looking to use this idea for their guestbook!

I tested Color Box pigment and dye ink ($6.50 each from Michael's). I found that while the dye ink dried almost immediately, the ink never fully came off of my finger (see picture in comments). The pigment ink was also brighter and only took a few extra minutes to dry. I swiped my finger over it while it was drying and it didn't smudge unless I really pressed down on it. The pigment ink also came off my finger instantly!

To clean the ink off, I used Johnson Hand & Face wipes. I also tried Purell (as mentioned in my previous post) and while it did get the pigment ink off of my thumb, it left a purple residue on my hands (I needed to use a paper towel to get it off).

Pigment ink on the left (of photo), dye ink on the right...

ETA: I'm still searching for a good marker (Sharpie?) for guests to use when writing their name/initials over their thumbprint!

The wipes I used to get the ink off. I plan to put a small trash can next to the guestbook table as well as a sign explaining the directions for the guestbook.

We're doing a fingerprint guestbook too and I'm still so nervous about the logistics. We bought ink pads/pens directly from the Etsy seller that sold us our drawing because a) they described the pens as acid-free and archival and b) it was too convenient for me to pass up.

I think they're Faber Castell brand for whatever that's worth.
