The beach, the sand, and my dreads - What do I do??

The O-fficial MrsJoseph!, on July 20, 2010 at 10:20 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 21

We are going to Jamaica for our honeymoon. Its going to be fun days of chilling at the beach - but what do I do about the sand?? I've only been to the beach once since I've had dreadlocks and it was a HOT MESS. I had to wash my hair daily for 2 weeks to get it all out - and if you have hair like mine you KNOW that's a problem. I looked like a rat's nest - hair everywhere!

What do I do about the sand? How do I keep it out my hair? How do I get it out once it does get in there?

I'm trying to avoid have a repeat of the rat's nest syndrome, lol

I don't have dreads but I do have really thick hair so I have to stay away from sand. The only thing I do is have a huge beach towel (of lounge chair) and a separate towel on the side. Hands and feet have to be sand free before getting on my beach towel. If you are very careful about it you will end up with sandless hair in the end. Most of my friends wear hair wraps to the beach for this reason BUT it's too frickin hot to have something on your head other than a cute hat and they look a lil country with it (it works tho) Good luck hun. Plz let me know if you come up with anything else.

I'd suggest some sort of 'do rag type deal to prevent as much exposure as you can- but if the wind starts blowing- you're in trouble!

Girl get it done in an updo or some type of braided twist style so it's not all out and flowing and you'll be fine! My FHs cousin has locs down to her butt and she does this and has ni proplems. Me and all my girls had locs when we went to JA and had no problem. Keep it up or in a head wrap on the beach so that you can feel free!

@DCT - my hair is sooo heavy that I hate up-dos. THey pull my hair out the scalp: http://thenaturalbride.wordpress.com/2009/10/24/removing-my-up-do/

And I look silly, too! http://thenaturalbride.wordpress.com/2009/10/19/twist-it-sista/

Can you wear a scarf just on the top of your head with the dreads down? That way at least you'll protect your scalp! And I ALWAYS have to wash my hair daily, so I don't feel thaaaat bad for you Smiley winking

Dang girl...did she pull it too tight?

What about french braids? That would look really pretty and you can let them hang down your pack or pen them up in the back...I'll try and find you some picts!

LOL @ Erin - the difference is that my hair doesn't maintain the proper amount of oil & moisture balance. So when I wash my hair too much, I like like a chia pet who stuck their finger in a electrical socket. *zap!*

@DCT - Hmmm, I've never been much of a headwrapper.... that might be a possiblity. How hot is that stuff?

Man, I don't know what she called herself doing, but I called it not coming back for a re-do. My scalp was SORE for a minute!! Ugh. Maybe I'll try again with a different company?

I usually keep mine tied up but I also use this product called hair-n-scents not sure of the spelling and I forgot to bring some with me. I would keep it tied up. I also waited till it was dry and go through sections of my hair and shake the sand out. I have thick hair too and I really don't like to get my hair wet at the beach because the locs are so heavy when they are wet. not sure what else you could do though sorry hope that helped a little - Tracey

Grab one of those adjustable lounge chairs for laying or sitting on the beach. That may you don't have to worry about your hair getting anywhere close to the sand. I also like the wrap idea that DreamComeTrue posted a picture of. If it gets windy your hair will be extra protected.

If you decide to go with a wrap of any kind, make sure it is made of natural fabric like lightweight cotton or linen. They breathe better than anything with nylon or polyester will so it won't be so hot. Also, lightweight fabric stays in place better. Good luck!

I used to have dreds and whenever I went to the beach I always did one of two things 1) wraped my hair which was the easiest solution 2) kept a clean towel on hand to periodically wipe my hands, face and hair.

So my girlfriend looked at me and was like why do I get the feeling I'm going to be doing your hair for the wedding. I just gave her an innocent look...as if! Girl don't play with me...we all know you will be doing this head! ROFL The first pict is me in April. The second is how short I want it day after the wedding Smiley smile
