The cost of up-lighting...

MrsHicks, on January 24, 2014 at 8:11 PM

Is completely and totally RIDICULOUS!!! I have been playing with the idea of getting up-lighting and have gotten a couple of quotes, $1200 and $699. Are these folks crazy?! What are you paying for up-lighting (if you are getting it)?

We had DIY uplighting. We bought the uplights, and were able to sell them for almost as much as we paid for them, so the net cost was very small. Details are here if you are interested:

It is included in our dj package and our dj is $850. That includes all the uplightIng we want. We got a really good deal!

I'm not getting it. But the place that does my photobooth does it. You get 12 uplights for $200.

Some DJ's have that as an add on or included in their price. It's usually cheaper to go with a vendor your using

My actual reception will be from 12-4 on a a Sunday. Do people actually do uplighting during a day wedding? Does it really enhance oerall? (during the day-I mean)

My DJ does up lighting. I think for whole-venue up lighting he charges $400. He offered me a deal of $200, but I didn't take it.

Our venue offers it as an additional $800-$950 add on (depending on whether you want GOBO projection too) - I was ready to skip on it but luckily the old owner threw it in as a bonus for us before he left the company.

We haven't decided on uplighting yet. We are paying $1200 for our DJ and uplighting is done through a different vendor that our DJ works with exclusively. $360 for 12 lights...most likely we will do it.

    Hi Mrs. Hicks!

Congrats on your engagement... So, you're thinking of doing uplighting... Those prices are an industry average. The lights themselves cost anywhere from $250-600 EACH depending on what type of light and the functions that they have. If they are using wireless technology, the equipment costs alone are more exhuberent. Factor in the labor it takes to colorize, aim, focus, and program each fixture. And if cable must be run, it is even more.

There is ALOT that goes into uplighting a room properly. Use too few lights and it looks tacky. Use too many and it's over bearing. A seasoned lighting designer will tell you, lighting makes all the difference. The guests will not remember the chair covers and bows, the cheese tray, or the chocolate fountain. They will remember the entertainment and if they enjoyed a fun and comfortable atmosphere. Good luck and happy planning!

Uplighting can vary a lot, DIY is a great way to save, avoid the ones you have to plugin. Check with your planner or DJ if they'll set them up for you.

The easiest we found was rentuplights.com because it's all wireless you just turn the lights on and touch the color that you want. They are brighter than the other plugin rentals so you can use less of those lights and save. They run between $23-$30 per light depending on how many you need with free shipping.

You can also estimate how many uplights you'll need based on the room size or guest count. So you can check to see if the person you're getting lights from is pushing too many or not enough.
