The great sealing wax debate...

Julie B, on October 6, 2011 at 10:24 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 10

Hey girls.

I would LOVE to do sealing wax envelope seals on our invites. I have read a lot of old posts and plenty of interweb info about these things. Has anyone used this? Of course I want something that goes through a glue gun. Not sure if the real wax or the faux wax works better. Please let me know what you think. Lucky for me, my wedding hostess is a postmaster, so she can give me the mail-related info... All thoughts appreciated, as always.

I'm also doing the sealing wax (I just received my stamp in the mail yesterday!). I haven't bought my wax yet, but here's advice that I found on Letterseals.com:

My seals are going to be mailed. What wax is best for mailing?

    Our top recommendations are:

    Cire Souple line (shiny finish)

Glue Gun Sealing Wax (matte finish)

    Faux Wax (lightly shiny finish)

    Waterstons (shiny finish)

    LetterSeals.com Wick (matte finish)

Aladine French Glue Gun Wax (matte finish)

    Stuart Houghton Wick (matte finish)

Stuart Houghton mini Glue Gun Wax (matte finish)

    J. Herbin mini Glue Gun Wax (slight pearl finish)

The strongest holding of these is our Faux Wax, which will hold to smoother papers better than actual waxes (such as vellum).

    Thanks Andrea (date twin). :-)

Where did you get your stamp? What is the design? I want a really cool Monogram but haven't seen one for the kind of money I want to spend.

We used a wax seal candle and stamp from Michael's Crafts on our save the date cards and invitations. On the save the dates we had a minor problem. We had glossy photo paper cards and stuffed them facing the back of the envelope. The heat from the wax left a mark on a couple of the photos. It would have been fine if we had just placed the card glossy side toward the front of the envelope. We had no problems at all on the invitations. Ask your post office to hand stamp them so they don't go through the sorting machine. Our post offive was completely accommodating. The stamp added such a nice touch to the STD cards and the invites. Using the candles was fun for the groom too. Just have him practice on a sheet of paper first.

I got a bumble bee stamp (we're having the bee-themed wedding) for $12 off of Amazon. We have Amazon Prime, so we got free 2 day shipping.

What type of monogram are you looking for? Do you want a single letter or three letters (your and his first initials and last name initial)?

LOL. I told him this morning that he has to learn how to make little nosegay bouquets to attach to our pew bows...he was less than thrilled

Our save the dates are glossy, and just postcards-no envelopes. Our invites are matte. I ordered a sample (10 free) from Vista. If they turn out, I will order the 100 or so I need and then order envelopes from another site where we can get inner/outer with coordinating envelope liners for really cheep.

Of course, you will all see pics of EVERYTHING when done.

Probably just the last initial. A really kick ass Old English letter B. That would probably be a lot cheaper than a custom one with our first initials too. We will use it later (with our boatload of free return address labels) for thank you notes and other correspondence.

I used sealing wax to seal our invitation envelopes and it worked out great but a little messy. Our guests loved the added touch too. I just got the white wax from Michaels and the double heart stamp which somehow managed to work its way through my entire wedding with out me even trying to add it.

Mrs. Jeff--what kind did you use? Traditional, glue gun wax, or faux glue gun wax? and did you stamp right on the envelopes, or did you do them on something else and then attach to envelopes with and adhesive???

I just used the regular wax they had next to the wedding invitation sets. It was pretty easy to use as they are set like candles and you just light the wick and let some of the wax drip onto the envelope where you want to seal it then press the stamp on it and wait a few seconds for it to cool down.

It can get a little messy so make sure you have paper towels on hand

I used the white color and after the first few uses the wax started to get a burnt look to it from the flame but it kind of added even more character to the invites but looking aged.

I've only ever used the candle-type sealing wax. The benefit to the glue gun version seems like it would go where you want it. It's easy to splatter the candle-type ones.

Here's a strange tip: the stamp releases better if it's slightly damp. Also, let the wax cool a little before using the stamp.
