The Truth About Wedding Cake & Servings! I THINK?! :)

Kelsey, on July 28, 2010 at 2:30 PM Posted in Planning 3 20

My sister had her wedding about 4 years ago and she had 300 people just for dinner and over 400 people for the dance. Her cake that she got only fed 150 people and they had a lot left over. To tell you the truth girls not everyone is going to eat cake. It all depends how you serve it. Some places will give everyone a piece even if they dont want it, some will ask everyone, and some will cut the cake and put on it on small plates by the cake therefore if you want it you can grab it on the way passed.

What are you doing for your serving size and how many people are invited?

We'll have just under 100 guests. apple crisp will be plated and served by roaming servers. not 1 slice put at each table setting, that's a waste. I never eat wedding cake, it's the worst. but they always put it in front of me and any other empty seats at the table while everyone is dancing. it's stupid.

My venue suggested getting "to go" boxes..they will cut and wrap up the cake in my to go boxes so my guests can eat it later. They told me that people tend to be so full after all the eating and drinking that there is no room for cake...plus in my catering price a dessert bar is included so I think more people will do that rather than the cake. I opted for the cheapest cake in my area and got 3 tiers which should feed everyone at my wedding...I think 2 tiers would have been more than enough but I just like the look of 3 tiers and it wasnt much more haha...

I had 150 guests and we did a smaller cake with several sheet cakes. I'm not sure how much was left over but we did a piece for everyone and the servers served them. Definitely a great money saving idea to set them on plates and have people get pieces themselves.

The woman who is baking my cake told me that large round cakes, such as wedding cakes, are traditionally cut 2" long by 1" wide. Pieces are usually quite small, unless otherwise instructed. We will be having the servers cut and serve the cake to each individual, but there will be an option to take the cake home - as well as any leftovers. We will be having quite a number of children at the wedding, and if slices are left out, I imagine the kids will be eating all that is left out - and FH is expecting there to be left over cake!

I'm having cupcakes, and I will have the servers ask everyone if they'd like one, if not then we get to take it home.

We were really worried about having lots of extra cake, so we are going with cupcakes, and making about 1/4 less than what we have guests for. And a small (6") cake for our cutting. And we have a chocolate fountain to round out the dessert table. We were orignally anti-cake/cupcakes, but after much arm twisting from our families, we compromised with the cupcakes.

    Great advise!!

    .

Most likely, I will have it served and they can take it home if they don't want to eat it there. I want to make sure everyone gets a piece.

I think that the "cake" isn't so much about people eating it as much as it is used at most parties. I don't plan on keeping the cake top either. The cake place here actually makes a mini replica of the original cake on the 1 year anniversary. So there will be plenty to go around. I have three daughters so I bet they would Loooovvveee cake for a week Smiley winking but its more about looking at it then eating it. Thats why so many people do the mini cupcakes or the mini cake favors so they save on a large cake and the favors like a 2 in one deal.

I'm planning on keeping my cake top- sentimental thing and all.

I'm planning a HUGE cake, but half of it will be fake! I'm doing a 4 layered cake, with a grooms cake. The plan is to have a firetruck with the ladder extended to the top of the cake. The bride will be on top, and a sexy fireman will be climbing the ladder...

We wanted height, but knew that most people would go for the chocolate grooms cake... so that's where we're splurging!

My daughters cake would have been fine, except the day was HOT and the cake was sitting in the banquet room for several hours.

The bottom layer did not hold up well. It looked beautiful, but once the hotel staff tried to cut it, it just crumbled. It was Pink Champagne, so it was the most delicate layer.

They were able to serve the other two layers and most people that wanted cake were able to have a slice. The bridal party missed out, so the hotel let them select something from the restaurant menu at no charge to us.

We did bring the rest of the bottom layer home. It tasted great, just need to be kept chilled longer. Fortunately, guests had no clue that the bottom layer was removed from the room. Whew!

Oh, and the bakery that did the cake gives a gift certificate to the couple for an Anniversary cake, so no need to clear out freezer space.

We're having 130 guests and I want a cake that serves exactly 130 so for every person who doesn't eat cake, I get MORE cake! hehe I plan on eating cake and milk every single night of our honeymoon. I'm sure I won't fit in my dress afterward, but I was never going to wear that again anyway. hahahaha

Oh, and we also get an anniversary cake. I'll probably request that two weeks after the wedding. I freaking love cake... *especially* the cake we've ordered... pink champagne... gah! delicious!

Oh I completely agree. We had enough cake for 250 people. I probably only needed enough for 100 because a lot of the kids, elderly, and couples shared or had very little and I had a lot of other food and one other dessert and fruit.

Did you have other desserts as well? Our numbers look about the same: we are also planning to order a cake that would feed 75 people but will probably have around 120 people, but we will also have 5 or 6 other desserts (mini cheesecakes, cake pops, cookies, etc.) since it's a desserts reception. Based on your experience, do you think that cake size will be enough?

At my first wedding we had enough cake for each person to have a slice. We ended up with more than half of the cake as left over. What a waste of money. This time around we are getting a cake only for the "bride and groom". Part of the plated dinner at our venue includes dessert so the guest get a dessert and we save money on a cake.
