The usual (and shallow) ugly chair debacle

SimpleSeamstress, on May 2, 2015 at 12:14 AM Posted in Style and Décor 0 55

So I was planning on renting white wooden folding chairs for aesthetics purposes as my parish hall has these comfortable and new but not very attractive black chairs. My mom thinks I'm silly and just wasting money, my usually frugal sister says that if I am going to put all this thought into my decorations why would I keep these chair eyesores. My oh so practical family friend who is helping me day of says that I should just use the black chairs. She has a good point that we would have to set up the chairs and break them down (unless I want to pay quite a bit extra), and then there is a question of where to put them after the wedding until they are picked up. I think they pick up on Monday for a Saturday wedding. We can't just leave them hanging around the church until Monday! Seat covers by the way cost over twice as much as the chairs in my region! What would you do? Bypass the headache and the expense and just move on? I hate that this is bothering me!!

I will say that I don't think I've ever left a wedding and said, "Good food, had fun, bride was radiant, but how ugly were those chairs?" I don't think I would care about the world's ugliest chairs, and yours aren't even bad! It wouldn't be worth it, to me.

I have a similar issue and I'm just finding ways to work little hints of black into the decor so they won't look so out of place. At the end of the day though, it's the least of my problems.

Here are images from my inspiration board: I am having milk glass vases and light grey table cloths and colored papel picado hanging above (in the colors in the picture) I wanted the white chairs to tie in with the white vases.

Since I have a very plan venue, I wanted my decor to be special.

You're over thinking this. No one will pay attention to the chairs they will just be glad that they have one. I went to a wedding in August and I don't know what the chairs looked like. It's not something people will pay attention to.

I can honestly say that I have never even bothered to look at the chairs at a wedding before.

I know I will get over this or just be crazy and splurge money I don't have on paying the rental company to come and remove them right after the wedding lol! I am not having a fancy wedding, and my decor definitely will be my own unique taste, but I do get hung up on little details in general. I know that my wedding day will be a blur. When I think back on my friends' weddings I can't even remember what the centerpieces were! Thanks for the reassurance that I need to just move on.

What about chair covers to match more of your decor choices?

I know everyone says "no one cares about the chairs" but I feel the same way you do, and opted for the upgrade. I just look at pictures from other weddings at my venue and cringe when I see the cheap chairs they include. So we're sucking it up and paying to upgrade fee so I won't cringe when I look at my pictures. Does it matter to everyone else? Not really, but it does to me.

@Anne yes I feel the same way. I think I could let it go but if I could find a solution that would be preferable. Chair covers seem like a logical fix since they are easy to store and transport, however the only rental company near me that actually carries them charges $5.40 a cover!! The white wooden chairs cost $2.50 each and I actually like the way they look better. I'm going to call the company and see if they could pick up the chairs in the evening after the wedding for an additional fee. I am having to rely on my friends and family to break down the wedding so I don't want to over burden them just for some chairs!

I've seen chair covers to buy for around $2.50. You could buy them and see if your venue would give you half of what you paid for them. You get cheap chair covers for your wedding and they get them for future events! Win win!

My venue has those same exact chairs. I didn't like them either but I didn't want the extra cost to rent different ones or get chair covers. I asked people, too, and they all said that no one will remember what the chairs will look like. To camouflage the chairs, I chose our darkest wedding color for tablecloths. Since the room will be dim anyway, the navy tablecloths will look very close to black, so the chairs will blend in with the rest of the decor. Save the unnecessary expense.

If you can afford them, and you want them, then get them. It's not up to anyone else.

Usually I would say the chairs are no big deal but I think in this case the black chairs would really stand out because all of your other decor will be white & other light colors. Maybe you can find a way to incorporate black in your wedding colors? If not, I'd probably rent the white chairs & see if they can pick them up that night

Personally, I hate chair covers. They never fit right, they're usually creased and they are slippery to sit on.

I'd just use the black chairs honestly; I couldn't tell you what any chair from recent any wedding looked like, and no one else will remember either.

Here's an idea though; two of my brides last week used white anemones (with black centers) in their mostly very pastel bouquets. The bouquets were just gorgeous and the black accents really made them pop. Very sophisticated. (Like Jennifer's avatar above sorta, but that's a gerbera )

I have bought from a company called tableclothsfactory.com many times. They have great prices and lots to choose from whether you decide for covers or a sash. You could always resell later. My daughter recently married and we rented chairs. The chairs at the camp were dirty and uncomfortable. I think I would have noticed as a guest. Best wishes

I'm an extremely frugal person and saving money is serious for me, but if the white wooden chairs will make you happy get them. Do I think any of your guests will notice the black? Not a chance, but you will and if it's a distraction to you then you should rent the white ones. I have to rent chairs either way and while I could go with the much much cheaper white metal ones, I'm going with the more expensive mahogany wood folding chairs...because that's what will make me happy. If it's in your budget do it.

I do not like chair covers and I am using the same black banquet chairs your venue has. They are way more comfortable to sit on then a lot of wooden folding chairs with no padding.

I feel for you my venues chairs have gold in them so I incorporated gold as an accent color to tie it all together! I know it's a tough decision but I also do not like chair covers and was not about to incur the extra expense.
