The usual (and shallow) ugly chair debacle

So I was planning on renting white wooden folding chairs for aesthetics purposes as my parish hall has these comfortable and new but not very attractive black chairs. My mom thinks I'm silly and just wasting money, my usually frugal sister says that if I am going to put all this thought into my decorations why would I keep these chair eyesores. My oh so practical family friend who is helping me day of says that I should just use the black chairs. She has a good point that we would have to set up the chairs and break them down (unless I want to pay quite a bit extra), and then there is a question of where to put them after the wedding until they are picked up. I think they pick up on Monday for a Saturday wedding. We can't just leave them hanging around the church until Monday! Seat covers by the way cost over twice as much as the chairs in my region! What would you do? Bypass the headache and the expense and just move on? I hate that this is bothering me!!

Heres a place that has quality chair covers to rent for $2 each https://rentmywedding.com/Chair-Covers.html. You can also purchase them for a little bit more from http://www.cvlinens.com/chair-covers-c-16.html?osCsid=f1e3e4b1aee3f022f63c33be609f22a0 They have so many styles to choose from. If the venue will buy them from you that would be great and they could rent them out in the future!

When I got engaged and started talking to my sister about her wedding, asking what she would do differently if she could do it again, she told me that she would change the color of one of the balloons that they used. My response was a mental, "What balloons?" But almost twenty years after the wedding, that was STILL bothering her. So my advice - if it's going to bother you, pay the $700 and get it done the way you want. Is that a good chunk of money for something that probably feels like it shouldn't be a big deal? Yes. But if it's bugging you enough that you are looking at options and posting here, then go for it, get the white chairs (I think they'd look great with your set-up, by the way!) and have no regrets! Smiley smile

@Maria, thank you! Smiley smile I am totally leaning towards getting them. I was on the fence and it could go either way, but I keep thinking about those darn chairs!

I have this dilemma and have to bite the bullet one way or another when I have my final venue meeting on 5/26 (a month til wedding!).

@Kristy, I think I'll be taking your approach sipping some wine before AND after shelling out the cash for our chivari chairs that are $7/chair (about 240 guests) plus $250 setup fee.

@SS, I do feel that looking back at our pics I'll regret it if I don't get the chairs I always wanted.

I am guilty of renting chiavari chairs for my reception. The hotel has ugly brown banquet chairs that I didn't want to use when I saw how pretty the ivory linens looked on their display table they used for our tasting. Shallow I know, but I don't want to look back on my pictures and see those brown chairs when everything else is ivory/grey/purple. I am renting for $4/chair to get silver chiavari chairs with ivory cushions and I am happy with the decision.

No one will notice or remember the chairs, but you will. I am paying extra to rent chiavari chairs. They change the whole look of the room.

I'm kind of trying to figure out what to do with the chairs at my venue too and just realized I have no idea how ANY of the chairs were decorated at any of the weddings I've been to. Hmmm ..

TBH I don't think the black chairs are that bad. They aren't as pretty as the folding chairs but I don't feel like they'll take away from anything because they seem pretty neutral. From what I've seen the folding chairs aren't usually too expensive to rent for the day though compared to, say, the Chivari chairs. My venue has horribly ugly brown and greenish chairs that have seen a lot of use, and we are upgrading those because they are gross.

To me when people say this and that don't matter, I dont really care if it matters to me. So if it will bother you, get the other chairs if you can afford them.

Trust me, you won't notice the chairs & neither will anyone else. Black is

Neutral so it isn't going to stand out in a bad way.

I get the general argument that "no one remembers what the chairs looked like" but at the same time, when you have this beautiful venue all decorated, ugly chairs may stand out as 'not fitting' even if no one really notices exactly what they look like. I also hate chair covers. IMO they usually look like sacks with a bow. (There are a few that I have seen that do look nice though.) I actually had 'not ugly chairs' as a requirement for our venue because I didn't want chair covers. So I'd say if you can afford it, do it. If money is tight, skip it. In the grand scheme of things, does it really matter? ...Maybe?

I am definitely one that notices tiny details. You may have guests that are big on interior design/decorating (as I am) and will notice that it doesn't match, or like @Julia said, will stand out. I love design so I am definitely an observer, especially at parties (for inspiration, etc.). I think it's wrong to say NOBODY is going to notice the chairs because that wouldn't be true... everyone is different and will notice various things that others may not notice. I'd say if you don't have the money, don't worry about it. After all, they're just chairs. But I do agree with @Julia that they can make a huge difference. I think that if its become a worry, then you should just get them. You might look at pictures in the future and feel regret for not getting them. I mean, it's YOUR big day right? Make it perfect. I think you have a beautiful theme and if thats what you want you should do it.

Personally as a guest. I only notice chairs when they are cushioned. So at least those chairs have a nice thick cushion. I would save your moment. I'd rather see a candy bar or nice favors, then upgraded chairs.
