The waxing debate - what I learned and wish I knew ahead of time

This may be TMI, so if you don't like that - stop reading now. Since I was debating having my first Brazilian wax for my wedding, I figured there would be others as well. So, I thought I'd share my experience from my first time this past Sat & what I wish I knew ahead of time.

I went to the European wax center where they use the hard wax. This wax they put on, it dries they pull it off verse the soft wax where they put it on, put on a strip and then pull. They said that this wax doesn't stick to your skin, just the hair. I would say that it's fairly true.

I get to my appointment, go into the room and she tells me to undress from waist down. They didn't give any paper panties, just sit on the table and lay back. Put your legs in frog position and the way we go. She talked through the 4 steps (first was powder, 2nd was something else, 3rd the wax, 4th lotion or something for after the fact). The wax itself was 6 main sections, that's it. The whole thing took 10 minutes. Cont below

I would not recommend doing a bikini a couple times and then only doing a Brazilian once right before the wedding...get a Brazilian two, or three times, if you can afford it. I say this because of the way hair grows in a cycle...you're more likely to stay completely smooth for a longer amount of time if you've had the same wax more than once.

Also, in case anyone who reads this doesn't know, it is not possible to get a Brazilian while wearing paper panties (well, without sacrificing quality)...so if you feel like you need some coverage, just get a bikini wax.

I use to get a wax every 6 weeks or so until my lady left the salon and I just stopped getting it done (way to expensive for me) and I felt like it never really lasted as long as I wanted it to for the amount of money I was paying.

I never had to take my undies off though. The lady would put a piece of paper towel underneath so that it wouldn't get on the underwear and just pull it to the side. Which I liked since I didn't feel so "on display".

Since she quit, I get bikini waxes sometimes from another lady, but since it's been winter..... I haven't been too concerned about waxing - just making sure it doesn't get too outta control haha

I won't be getting a Brazilian before the wedding, but will definitely get a bikini wax.

I've been thinking about Brazilian waxing for bout a month, but ive never heard of European waxing. Kitty cat waxing is somewhat of a bucket list thing for me, but I to have heard horror stories. I'm gonna be a big girl & get it done!!!!

Allison, I've never heard it called "kitty cat waxing" and now I might have to use that phrase!

For what it's worth to those without a European Wax Center near them, I did just go to a regular salon and take the first available person. I did some research on Yelp just to make sure it was a clean place and all that, but I didn't have any problem with it. I probably will request the same person from now on just to make it slightly less awkward.

You posted this too late! ha! I went two weeks ago. I pretty much would say most of the same points. the middle hurt the worse, everything else hurt but went away quickly. I am pleased with how it is growing back! I got a bikini and underarms. The part that hurt the worst was the middle. oof.

Also, I was swollen for like the three days. That sucked, she recommended putting hydrocortisone cream on the areas, that helped.

Apparently there are European Wax Centers near me, too! Booking a session for Thursday (9 days before wedding) just in case I get all red and sensitive for a few days. Just want to make sure I have my terms right -- "bikini line" does the edge and leaves hair where a bikini would cover it, "bikini" takes it all off in front, and "Brazilian" takes it all off front and back?

I have been getting brazillians (via sugaring) for over a year, and I will NEVER go back to shaving. My brazillian takes 8 minutes, which is 1000 times faster than shaving in the shower haha. I love sugaring because the product is natural (often made out of sugar, lemon juice and cornstarch), leaves no difficult removing residue, and the esthetician can can control the pressure with her hand. Yes the positions she makes you move into are weird, but as I said, 8 minutes and you're good to go. It's worth the awkward frog legs!

ETA: I have no swelling/bruising, and can go for a run right after. I recommend to wear cotton panties right after, because when I wore lace ones (my appointment was after work one day), they rubbed a bit and it was bit uncomfortable.

Yall. I got a brazilian for the first time in...10 today. Took it ALL off (usually I leave a strip). Shit hurt like...well, thought I was gonna pass out at times lol. But I made it through! LOVE the result though.

@Rosemary - yes, first time customers can get a free brow/underarm/or bikini wax with a purchase of another wax. But, if you are getting a Brazilian wax, since the bikini wax could be free they just give you half off of your Brazilian.

@Chrissy - yes you are correct. Bikini, Bikini full, and Brazilian I believe they label them, but your descriptions were correct

I'm glad you posted this Jillian. I've been wanting to go to the European Wax Center near my house, but I haven't had the guts to do so yet. I was going to start this summer, so that I would be prepared by next year. Thank you for helping to set my mind at ease!

Thank you for sharing! This is something I've wanted to do for a long time but never had the balls to do it. I've never heard of the European Wax Center, but just found out there's a few of them about a half hour away from me! According to their website, if you book your reservation online, your first wax is free (brow, underarm or bikini line)! I'm going for it. If I start now, I should be a seasoned pro by the time my wedding rolls around! lol

Yay for Brazilians! I'm glad you had a good experience, Jillian. I've been lucky enough to have the same amazing esthetician for the last 3 years, and it's so great to have a go-to person that you're comfy with; I go once a month, so I literally see her more often than I see most of my friends (who live all across the country). I always look forward to seeing her, and she's also planning her wedding now so we've been swapping tips. It probably helps that the salon serves wine, champagne and brownies while you wait! I've been waxing for like 15 years, though, and never shave my bikini area, so at this point, my waxes pretty much last a full 3 weeks, which is awesome.

This is making me interesting in getting a wax of some sort. I hate shaving with a passion since it itches so bad when it grows back, but if it won't itch... I might just have to try it.

I'm bringing this post back up because I wanted to say thank you for sharing your experience and thank you to Surfergirl for sharing about European Wax Center. I got my first wax on Saturday and I went to a local franchise of theirs. The place was nice, my girl was great and it didn't hurt as much as I expected, however, the next day (or two) were not as pain free as I had expected either. lol So, thanks ladies!!

I started waxing last July due to my upcoming wedding (in 5 days). I knew I wanted to have a least a couple waxes "under my belt" before the big day. I have been going to European Wax Center the whole time. At first I started with just the full bikini, but now I get full bikini, full leg and underarm. I get it all done each time I go in. It's almost an addiction. hahaha I will never go back to shaving.
