Things okay to put on the registry (and things not to)

Katie, on April 13, 2017 at 5:23 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 43

FH and I are finally starting on our registry, and he keeps asking about different things that don't seem like they belong on the registry...but I want to check before I tell him no.

Couch, shop vac/vacuum, modem/router, bed pillows (like for sleeping on, not the fancy ones you barely touch)...gosh, there are so many possibilities!

As a general rule of thumb, what should be put on the registry, and what are some things that aren't appropriate for it (besides lingerie, baby stuff, and such)? Any must haves that a lot of people don't think about?

It's kind of overwhelming.

I definitely think it's okay to go beyond the standard housewares on your registry. You can add items related to home improvement/maintenance or a hobby that you and FH share. Board games, lawn games, and camping gear can be good ideas if you enjoy those kinds of activities.

The only thing I don't like to see on registries is items that are only for 1 person. So I would avoid clothes or items related to a hobby that only one of you participates in.

I mean, if you need it, put it on. We put a grill cover, cat tree, bed pillows, milkshake machine, etc on ours. Nice sheets, a new comforter set, bathroom items, and kitchen items are all standard. But creating a registry off amazon makes it easy to add whatever you want! ETA: Yup I'm the crazy cat tree lady!

@JJ I'm hoping someone gets it! If not, it's one for sure thing I'm getting with my completion discount!

We have a cat tree on ours too!! We figure it will be entertainment for us all since watching him attack the little scratching pole made of the same material is just hilarious.

We are putting a new TV on our registry... we don't expect anyone to buy it for us, but we get a completion discount on any items that didn't get purchased from our registry. So that TV will be cheaper for us to buy for ourselves afterwards! We have a wide variety of things on ours, and many different price points. We have things ranging from $2 taco plates (they help keep your tacos standing while you stuff them I guess??), $95 fancy sheet set, all the way up to an amazing $300 pots/pans set.

FH had 2 requests for our registry and didn't care about anything else... PS4 and a squatty potty. Anyone who looks at our registry will know exactly which ones he wanted to add lol.

Other than those 2 items, I think our registry is pretty basic.

I have stuff for outdoors...like fountains, outdoor lanterns, etc. I even have a couple of fountain pumps because I want to build a few outdoor fountains myself. I think I put a hammock on there. I tried to put a variety of items on there. Just did one in case people ask what we want, I can point them to the website. Don't really care...I can buy the stuff myself. But if was kind of fun to put one together. My FH wanted me to put cigars on there, but I couldn't find a cigar store wedding registry.

@Klynn, My FSIL said that she added laundry detergent and other household supplies and didn't have to go shopping for them for the first six months of marriage! I'm definitely adding some to my Target Registry!

Laundry detergent sounds amazing haha I feel like my family would side eye me or think it's tacky Smiley sad

But I'm thinking of bikes and tennis racquets. Hopefully no one thinks it's weird. Along with a plethora of house stuff

My FH added 2 Nerf guns (one for each of us), a Lego Millennium Falcon, and a PS4 controller to ours...people will know exactly who picked those items lol. Everything else we have is pretty standard I think.

I had a friend who registered for camping equipment on theirs. Maybe someone somewhere on their guest list thought it was tacky, but I found it adorable and happily bought them a two-person sleeping bag.

@Teresa S. FH is dying laughing at the squatty potty. I send him a pic of one when he's in the bathroom forever with a "Do I need to get you one?" text.

We put a book on hiking trails in ours, as well as some freeze-dried camping meals. We already have all the camping gear we need. Some other unusual items we registered for were some Nespresso coffee pods, a dog bed, a bike tire pump, velvet clothes hangers and stud finder.

I would definitely side eye laundry detergent or anything like that...

But OP, I think the things you're asking for are very reasonable!
