Things to do instead of dancing?

on January 24, 2019 at 8:53 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 25
Hey there! So, I have a problem.
My Fiancé’s parents and my grandparents are VERY conservative Christians and they are against dancing at my wedding. I personally don’t care if we have dancing. I would rather not just cause I don’t like to dance lol.
anyways, I still want to be able to entertain my guests.. I’m going to have about 100 guests, most of which are family & very few friends.

Do any of you have ideas on what else I could do other than dancing?

Also, we do plan on having a mariachi band and doing the first dance... but that’s about it

Oh wow, well if its doesn't bother you than it doesn't matter. Its your wedding. Maybe some fun games that could include everyone... You can do the wedding shoe game, google wedding games it should be able to give you some great ideas...

I'd probably just have a nice dinner and then expect people to go home. I've been to only dinner receptions before and they're fine, just shorter.

I would look into having games there and trivia about you and the groom.

If you don't want dancing, you could have some yard games (is it outside?) like corn hole.

This! I can't imagine staying much longer after dinner if there is no dancing.

This is a cute idea. I also agree with what others have said about leaving earlier if there is no dancing. I would look for ways to lengthen dinner.

What do both of your families like to do for fun? You could do yard games like cornhole, giant jenga, etc. or various card games. Karaoke could be an option. I wouldn't expect guests to stay very late.

Depending on the formality of your wedding, I've seen where people had a carnival themed wedding so they set up different game "stations" outside of the venue (this was a more casual event at a rustic barn) You could also do food station catering instead of a formal sit down dinner so it creates more of a eat and mingle atmosphere vs a sit down dinner where guests are kind of left wondering what to do next when they are finished.

I think some nice stories or speeches to start would be neat. You could do more introductions of your wedding party members rather than just announce them walking in, tell stories about when you first met, or provide more people the chance to speak! I would also maybe do a little slide show of pictures?

There are plenty of wedding games you could play as well. Something that might be fun would be to make a Kahoot game with questions about you and your FH and have some neat little favor for the winner or let them lead the next game.

Would a photobooth be out of the question? People might enjoy that and they would stay a little longer which would give you the chance to talk with more people while others are in the booth or give you the chance to get pictures with people you might not have otherwise

We aren't doing dances either. We have an outdoor ceremony, so we're having yard games and a photo booth instead. Do what feels best for you!

So many great ideas like games, that are about you guys like the show game or even board games( you like or think others would like) I like the idea of photo booth, maybe stations where they can sign or leave advice for you guys! Maybe leave out photo albums of each of you guys from when you were younger plus ones of you guys now.

Is anyone else against dancing, or just his grandparents? Are you having a DJ? If you are, people will dance because that is the most typical things to do at weddings.

His parents and My grandparents are as well. I honestly don't mind though because I don't want a long reception anyway, probably what I'll end up doing is have them eat (of course lol) do 1st dance, play a few games with my guest, maybe give a few speeches, have a photobooth

We are doing board games and card games for our reception. Cards are pretty cheap and you can ask everyone to each bring their favorite board game if you don't want to get them all yourself!

I’ve been to several smallish (50 people or less) destination weddings and the food & drinks were plenty. Guests socialized just fine!

I do like Megan’s idea of action food stations to create a little more interactivity. A pasta station is fun. Maybe a fancy coffee/tea/hot chocolate bar with the dessert table would be nice too.

I’d imagine games during a brunch wedding rather than evening. Would a photo booth be better for your guests? Honestly, I don’t think either is necessary but your call!

I wouldn’t do a first dance if you’re not allowing your guests to dance. There should either be dancing for all or none at your reception.
