Thoughts on number of hors d'oeuvres during cocktail hour?

Donna, on June 25, 2024 at 2:14 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 4

Hi there! i'm in the midst of planning our cocktail reception and i'm struggling a bit with the right number of hors d'oeuvres to serve during cocktail hour.

right now, our schedule is:

3:45 - 4:15P ceremony

4:15 - 4:30P transportation to reception

4:30 - 5:45P cocktail hour

5:45 - 6:00P champagne toast and speeches

6:00P dinner

we're offering 5 different options--an oyster, scallops, duck spring roll, lamb lollipop, and a croquette. this will be followed by a six course dinner--an amuse bouche, a soup or salad, another appetizer, an entree, an intermezzo, a dessert--and a macaron bar.

how many hors d'oeuvres do you think we should plan for our guests? we'll be a group of 22-24 adults and 4-7 children. my gut was 125-150 pieces, but my event coordinator is pitching 190.

thanks so much in advance

I have always been told to plan on 8-10 apps a guest. Some people may have more and some may have less. Depending on the ages of the children they ll probably have less. Personally I rather have extras than not enough. I d definitely go with what the event coordinator is recommending. Good luck!

Although I think none of those appetizers sound appetizing, I would suggest that you go with the amount that the event coordinator is suggesting.

Maybe do 2-3 per person? That way everyone can have enough

I suggest following with the event coordinator's advisement. Some guests may try 5-10 for the fun and novelty. Better to have more apps than to run out and look poorly planned.
