Thoughts on Silk Flowers??

Diana & Chris, on August 7, 2013 at 2:49 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 20

My Fiance and I are on a very tight budget. We are debating whether to use real touch (silk) flowers or real flowers..we have seen comments from brides about how happy they are or were with their real touch flowers. Thoughts? Places or websites where I can find these flowers or services?

There can be a difference between real touch and normal silk. I bought bushes of silk flowers from Just a $1.00 and i made five bouquets (55 flowers and 12 leaves) for $11. Real touch flowers are approximately $7 per bloom. I got nicer roses in a bush at Hobby Lobby, 13 roses for $8, which made all of the boutonnieres and corsages. I dont even want to know what real flowers wouldve cost, plus there is no chance of these dying.

Wanted to point you to a former WW bride who opened an Etsy shop with silk and real touch flower bouquets. She does beautiful work and is able to work with your budget. Here's her shop and links to a few bouquets:

Edited with pics...As much as I wanted real, I couldnt afford the prices florists were wanting. I ended up finding someone on etsy that was willing to work with my visions and my price range. I got 4 boutoneires, a bridal bouquet, and 2 toss bouquets.

One toss is for my daughter - my MOH, and the other as the toss. They are LOVELY!!! I can not wait to use them. They are a mixture of silk and natural I think. (I am still waiting for them to arrive)

I'm using silk flowers I got at Michael's for all my centerpieces and arrangements. We're going to use real flowers for the bouquets and stuff because there is only one MOH and one BM.

Just an FYI real touch flowers usually end up costing much more than real flowers. In my area they go for 7.00 or more per flower. If you want real flowers but on a budget I would suggest looking at grocery florists like Kroger and Whole Foods.

If you are on a tight budget and would like real flowers, like Briggitte said, try a local grocer florists or opt for cheaper seasonal flowers. The silk flowers where I am cost as much as it would be at a florist.

Honestly, I am going to go with whatever is cheaper probably. I know a few of the florists here work with both silk and real flowers. So I will get some opinions and prices, and go with whatever I can afford. I don't want to go overboard and spend too much. Flowers aren't one of the things I'm as concerned with. I just want them to look nice.

We did silk for the reception centerpieces, all bought on sale at michaels, and they were great and inexpensive and I didn't have to worry about them dying. For the bouquets and boutineres we used real. Most grocery stores with floral dept can do them at a savings over a florist shop. Also remember, some flowers may actually be cheaper real. Check prices both ways

This is one of the many reasons we chose to go with single stems... but if the florist is still ridiculous on the price of single-stem flowers, I will probably just say "forget it" and go crazy making beaded flowers, or a crystal bouquet, or something. (I know how to get beads and crystals wholesale, so not as big a deal as it sounds, lol!)

Just to throw my 2 cents in - yes, real touch can be expensive. However, Hobby Lobby has a half off floral stems about every 2-3 weeks. This brings the cost of the real-touch roses down to about $2.50 a stem. Their real-touch calla lilies are even more inexpensive - for the medium size ones (just the right size for bouquets) they are regularly $1.99 so at half price they are within anyone's price range. Most of the bouquets/cake toppers/flower girl crowns I make are with flowers I picked up at one of their half-off sales.

All of my centerpieces and large flower arrangements are going to be real touch. I got my hydrangeas, peonies and roses from Hobby Lobby. They were all 50% off and honey they look beautiful. Now, also try eFavorMart.com they have silk flowers too. I agree with Linda E: Fairy Godmother because these stems or $8 a each but its better to catch the sale. Also, Etsy has beautiful bouquets but they can get expensive..

I am going to order some flowers from www.afloral.com to see how real their fake flowers are. There are some good prices on their site. Some a little pricey though...

I'm making paper flowers for tables at my reception. Martha Stewart and many other websites have tutorials if you do a google search. We are having a travel theme wedding so I found maps at a thrift store that I am going to use.
