Thumbtack photographers

Corinne_, on May 21, 2015 at 7:37 PM Posted in Planning 0 12

After I read here about thumbtack, I put up a request for quotes and got several. One of them we like, but I'm just surprised that what he quotes is way under what he mentions on his webpage. Do you have experience hiring somebody through it? I'm a little worried. He has good reviews on there though, but no yelp reviews.

We got a few vendors from Thumbtack. They all did a fantastic job and were able to work with our budget. It doesn't hurt to meet with them, see some of their work and see what the contract entails.

I got two vendors on Thumbtack. Their rates were lower than their websites because they were available. I'm sure they'll be fine.

I got two vendors from Thumbtack as well. One is filling in a weekend (our photographer). He already had a wedding on Friday in the same area as us, and then one on Sunday in the same area as us. For him to travel back home in between would've been more expensive than for him to find a wedding for Saturday (ours) and fill in the spot. So we are under his regular rate, because no matter what he's making money on us. And he gets to stay at the beach the whole weekend. For our DJ, he has a full-time day job and he picks up wedding gigs on the weekend. One of my friends just used him on my recommendation, because he's been so easy to work with. He was great, and I really enjoyed watching him work before he did our wedding.

He's on a DW right now, so I'm gonna meet him after he gets back.

Corinne, I hired mine through thumbtack and the quote I received was MUCH lower than her website, but I think it's because I'm only hiring for 2-3 hours instead of a full day and night. They really do base it on your specific request.

None of my colleagues use Thumbtack because we have to pay to contact you, and most established vendors don't need to fill their calendars this way.

    Do your due diligence.

Check out Snapknot, it's a similar concept, but instead of seeing quotes you see photographers within your budget. I found my photographer on there and she's great. Just make sure you read reviews on other websites, such as Yelp.

I hired my photographer through thumbtack and her quote was also way less than her web page. I think she basically uses thumbtack to fill in the gaps. Not totally sure but I loved her and am super excited to have found her I wouldn't worry about it too much. Ours is a single mom and I think she uses thumbtack to make sure she'll have an income at all... Then she's more picky later. Not 100% sure that's just how I see it.

Also yes she already had Wedding wire reviews that were positive which helped me make my decision about her. My wedding is 13 months away but so far so good

Their prices on Thumbtack were lower because clients on TT expect crazy low prices. I use Thumbtack to fill the gaps but 90% of the vendors on there are scrubs (based on my area) Really use caution for vendors who only or mainly use TT...

Speaking as a vendor and a videographer/photographer, I am thoroughly disgusted with Thumbtack. Their programming has no system for vetting a potential customer, so bid requests can easily be spam, fraud or just frivolous. Almost 90% of my bids never get a response, even if I follow up with a second email, so that says something about the client base. Vendors get sucked in because the number of bid requests are far higher than the generally bonafide requests you get on Wedding Wire. I have been responding to bids for more about 18 months since i'd rather be working than sitting at home. I can tell you my return on investment is about 2-3 percent, and it only got this high because one client in all those hundreds of bids chose one of my photo/video packages with a 4 man crew! The groom upped the coverage when the bride's father wanted to spend more. Thumbtack may work sometimes, but for me almost every bid request is from either a bottom feeder, a spammer out to get personal information or simply frivolous.

Yeah its great for the client, but terrible for businesses. It costs the clients nothing and they gauge the photographers with no answer leads. It's disgusting. I already cancelled my account, chargebacks for all the leads charges and reported to the BBB.
