Thunderstorms + Outdoor Engagement Pics

Jacqui76, on June 9, 2015 at 10:08 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 21

We have our engagement photo shoot scheduled for Saturday, but there are thunderstorms in the forecast. Hopefully that will change, but if it doesn't, what are some types of indoor locations that could work for engagement pics? Or would it be best to reschedule and hope for better weather?

I would run the risk. Weather changes everyday. Start thinking of indoor places in your area (where are you?)

I'm in South Jersey. Maybe there is somewhere in Philly that we could go.

And it's only Tuesday so there is plenty of time for the weather to change.

I have seen some really cute engagement photos of couples in their own living rooms. Or what about an old public library or funky book store? Also funky small cafe?

I like the funky small cafe idea. I think I could find one of those if we do need to take it indoors.

I don't know if there are any local museums where photos are allowed but I could definitely do some research in the next couple of days!

My FH's cousin eloped on a Caribbean cruise. They were married during a stop on some island, outside along a cliff overlooking the ocean and a storm was moving in. The sky was dark behind them and the pictures were gorgeous. The colors simply popped.

Keep your current plan but have a plan B in case the weather changes. Another couple using the same photographer as me... Had their engagement pics taken on a day it decided to rain. It was near the end of the session but the decided to roll with it. What ended up happening was they were soaking wet ... Outside in the rain... And the photographer captured a sizzling sexy photo reminiscent of the scene in the movie "The Notebook". You never know. With the right photographer and the right attitude, even in the rain you could end up with some stunning pictures.

Weather is unpredictable, and weather can throw a big monkey wrench into your plans. I'm reminded of a bride, a really nice woman, who, after we told her that her venue was in foreclosure and might not be around when it came time to honor her May wedding date, decided that she would tell the venue that she wanted to push her wedding up to late November (the couple did not want to lose their deposit and be listed on a schedule filled with creditors who would get ten cents on the dollar). That's what happened, and wouldn't you know it. After it was dark, around 7:00 PM, it began to snow. It was not a storm or anything intense, but it was photo op. The photographer told the couple that if they were willing to pose outside, he could get some magnificent pictures of them. Those photos, the ones of them kissing and embracing in the snowfall, were amazing.

Talk to you photographer. See what he/she suggests in the event of some sort of weather issue. You could get some great shots if the photographer knows what they're doing.

Thanks for the advice, everybody! My photographer is on vacation this week but I did send her an email to see what she thinks, and hopefully she will have a chance to read it. I wouldn't mind photos in the rain but I'm not so sure about photos in thunder and lightning. If the storm comes rolling in towards the end that wouldn't be so bad. The other thing is that we're scheduled for 7:30 pm to take advantage of the sunset, which we wouldn't see in a thunderstorm. Maybe we can go earlier in the day.

Photos in the rain with umbrellas (as demostrated by msalmostchevere) are beautiful if taken by a great photographer. I would find a whimsical umbrella and go with it. And I guess have some back up indoor locations in case the rain is too crazy.

@Rosemary and @Soon2BMrsB I am hoping the weather forecast changes for you, since your day is way bigger than mine :-)

First off, I think with the right photographer and props and such, that could look amazing with lightning in the background. But I like the coffee shop idea.

Really the engagement shoot is supposed to be a good look into your life as a couple, so what are some indoor hobbies you enjoy together? If you like books, then go to a historic library. If you like sports or bowling, is there something like an ESPN zone near you? I think even home activities like video games could be a really cool narrative. Smiley smile

Oh good, Rosemary! Fingers crossed for you!!

I know I will be stalking the weather channel next year too. My venue has a great indoor backup plan but I would rather not take it inside.

Honestly, I have seen some AWESOME engagement pictures in storms, I would kinda want some pictures outside but that is just me.

We did a few different locations, including barnes and noble and a pub. These are my favorite from our indoor pictures.
