Tiktok Wedding Ideas

Courtney, on August 2, 2021 at 2:20 PM Posted in Planning 0 18

So I'm not sure who all else spends time scrolling through TikTok, but I saw one the other day that had an idea that struck me as rather interesting.

This bride was getting married in a spot where the ceremony and reception took place in the same spot (ceremony would flip to reception over cocktail hour) only instead of setting up for the full ceremony, they had seats set-up ceremony style for guests of honor (immediate family) and had everyone else seated at the reception tables to avoid the room flip.

I thought it was kind of a cool idea, because I'll be going through the same flip and I'm antsy at the time frame on it. I just don't know if it's super rude (it kind of feels like it) to do separate seating like that.

What do you guys think? And if you're on TikTok have you gotten any cool inspos or do you mostly cringe?

How involved is your venue in set-up/flipping the space/break-down? If it's a big DIY venue where you'd need to hire table and chair rentals (where the staff will drop off/set up, leave, and then return for pick up), I could see this situation happening. The only issue I really see with it is the view - guests will have to move their chairs around to see and they'll be farther away since tables will be spacing them out.

I used to work for my university's event services department and we could flip large rooms and even gymnasiums from lecture to banquet really fast, so I wouldn't worry about timing if your venue staff is hands-on when it comes to room flips!

I think this could work if it’s all in a small area, but if guests at their tables will be so far away they can’t hear you or struggle to see you, that could be a potential issue.

The venue is really involved, but it's one person and an intern in the event department. I used to be in this person's exact position, and I know the other staff aren't great about being around to help. I have an appointment this weekend to see if they can tell me a little more about how the ceremony space would be set-up.

There's a big covered patio that most of the tables will be set-up on, and it's farther back than where the ceremony itself takes place, but we're looking at probably 10 tables that will have to get set up? Hopefully I'll get a better idea this weekend Smiley atonished

Yea, that was one of my concerns too. Unless we rented some kind of stage I don't think the area we're getting married in is very conducive to the idea. I just thought it was worth considering though, maybe for some other people Smiley smile

I haven’t spent much time on Tiktok but this sounds like favoritism for lack of a better word. Why do something different for one group and not everyone? I have attended weddings where guests were seated at the tables for the ceremony and it wasn’t weird at all, and everyone was seated equally. In some situations, a flip is not feasible so you do what you need to.

I've been loving wedding tiktok lately!

I don't know if I would do that, but just because I hate being at conferences and sitting at the round tables and trying to see the speaker, so don't want to put anyone through that!

Yea that’s what I thought. I think they did it for photos to focus on who was important to them, but it seemed like it really edged that line into favoritism like you said. I think it would be especially weird in a larger wedding like the 150+ we’re looking at.

Yes! Someone always has their back to it, and it just makes it feel almost impersonal.

The only wedding I’ve seen that I get it worked at was a couple who rented a small standing stage and set up in the center of the room. Tables were setup on either side of their profiles, not to their backs. When ceremony was done the stage just got rolled away and the area doubled as the dance floor.

Generally in those situations, even at conferences, people will turn their chairs to face the the speaker. Even at awards shows like the Golden Globes they have circular tables with chairs turned to face the same direction for the program and it doesn’t come across as odd.

I am in this situation also. My wedding is in December and the ceremony and reception are in the same room. My venue is basically one room so no one has anywhere to go.

So we are going to set up tables with everything on them and put them to the side of the chairs and then pull them out after the ceremony. Then it should just take time to move tables and put chairs around them. I attached a picture of what my venue’s idea is. I hope this helps! Tiktok Wedding Ideas 1

I guess it depends on the venue shape! We're lucky - our venue for ceremony and reception is the same, but in separate spaces, so no need to flip.

I agree that it IS annoying to have to try and twist in your seat and see what's happening, and that would suck for a ceremony - it's not so bad for a reception since you can listen to a speech without seeing it being given, type thing, but not being able to see the bride and groom kiss or whatnot would be very disappointing.

Where I'm from, it's normal to have two or three rows of chairs and the rest of the guests stand, could you not do that, to reduce flip time?

My wedding took place in the reception room with everyone sitting at their reception tables. Immediate family was at the tables closest to the alter. The wedding party table was set up along the side already waiting on us. Therefore no room flip. Sooo much nicer. We only had maybe 50 people there though.

I saw this same Tik Tok and my opinion on it would be to either have everyone sitting at a table or everyone sitting in chairs.

I have a room flip scenario for mine. The ceremony will have chairs set up per usual but the tables will be ready against the wall. Cocktail hour will be in a different room closeby, and the staff will pull out the tables into a predesigned layout and that’s all it takes! Just have your cocktail hour away from that main area

If it rains, my ceremony would be on my fance floor. And family would sit like my 90yr old grandmother. Everyone else would be standing around thw floor, but they could stay in their tables as long as they can hear and see.

We’re getting married outside at a zoo. Unfortunately having cocktail hour in a different area isn’t feasible.

I’m not really worried about the flip, as I think about 80-90% of the tables will already be in place. There may be some placed to the side like some PP have mentioned, but I’m supposed to be talking with the venue this weekend to get a better idea.
I would rather have everyone seated the same way, and I prefer traditional wedding seating to having people seated at reception tables so that’s the route I’m planning on going ¯\_(?)_/¯

Wow a zoo is so cool!! I just saw the tik tok I think you were referring to!! I don’t think I like having some at tables and family up close for a few reasons.. 1. Yes it’s your family but I’m closer to some of my friends than my cousin who I haven’t seen in 8 years so it feels unfair 2. I spent $$$ on that dress and I’ll be damned if everyone can’t see it up close!! 3. If they can put some chairs in the middle why not all? You can have all the tables set up and the staff can move the chairs over in less than 10 minutes I bet.
