Timing for hair and makeup

Lauren, on February 10, 2022 at 9:03 AM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 18
My hair and makeup attendant said she only takes 15-20 per service. How long has it taken for you all? Is that standard?

That is really quick! Mine estimated 30-40 minutes per service for bridal party/moms and an hour per service for the bride.

I mean, it's half the time it took for me, so I would say yes. Do they have examples of their work? Like, pictures of real brides?

That seems super short. Mine is requesting 3 hours for 4 people.

Agreed! It seems super short. I’ve been a bridesmaid several times, and, those that had multiple stylists (to rotate between) with a start time by 9:00am, usually took about 2 hours total, so all the bridesmaids (usually 3-5 girls) and bride were done by 11:00am (or slightly later if the bride didn’t have a trial beforehand). Several times my hair/makeup was done earlier though (maybe 15-30 minutes before 11:00am). My brother’s wife only had one stylist, so I believe they allotted 4 hours to get ready. Do you/your bridesmaids have short hair? Plan to have simple updos? Are you not planning on having full makeup coverage? False lashes? All of the weddings I’ve been in (and even my bridal trials) had extensive curls (even if it was pinned up/back), so the appointments for just our hair (granted most of us have really long hair) took longer than 20 minutes.

That seems really short- I was quoted 45 mins per person for curls and basic makeup/lashes.

My makeup was said to take 2 hours just for me lol Each bridesmaid will be 45 min. That’s not including hair.

I also think that's pretty quick! My stylist estimated 1 1/2 hours for just me and around 45min for the moms and bm's individually! She had an assistant as well.

Echoing what others have said, this seems really fast! I was quoted for mine to take an hour (as the bride) and each of my bridesmaids to take 30-45 minutes. She is able to do all of our makeup by herself. Sometimes MUAs could have a second artist for larger bridal parties; but that's something they should communicate up front if it were to come up.

20 minutes is quick even for me being in the entertaining business where we have professional hair and makeup done for us. And that's with them being dictated exactly how to style it, done it many times before, and having previously worked with us therefore knowing our hair types, skin colors, etc. So I think 20 is impossible for anything of quality...

Mine said 40 minutes each for hair and makeup. 20 seems unlikely.

Mine said 45 minutes per service per person and 1 hr for the bride for each service. I do my makeup in 15 minutes and believe me it's not wedding day ready makeup lol

Um, what? Yes, I agree with the others, that is CRAZY short. My hair lady took an hour and a half during the trial (she was being consultative, checking this and that as we went along) and says she takes an hour on the wedding day. My makeup artist took the same, and said the same exact thing.

Makeup is a huge hobby of mine and I do it almost every day, and I can do it in 15-20 if I'm doing something VERY basic, but for an actual proper event? I give myself 40 minutes minimum, and would prefer an hour, just to take my time and be able to fix any mistakes, etc.

There is no way 15-20 should be long enough to do a full face of makeup worth paying for, and certainly not for a wedding, IMO!

My hair took 90 minutes for the wedding - the BMs and Moms took about 40-45 minutes each for hair. The MUA was there from 11-4 for six of us and mine, again, took the longest - and we didn't do fake lashes because the glue is usually latex and I have an allergy.

That seems quite short. I was quoted at 45 minutes per service (hair OR make up) per non-bride person (with my JR bridesmaid being a bit less) and then 2 hours for me. That being said, my team also let me know that it could be shorter or longer, depending on the looks/length of hair. But 30-40 minutes total seems very very short. I mean... that's how long I take to do my hair and make up on a regular day. If I have wet hair it can take closer to an hour for everything. And that's just "going to the store" days, nothing fancy!

I used to be a makeup artist way back when, and 15 minutes was usually for a quick touch up or something very simple and quick. It's pretty standard to average about 45 minutes for a "full face" of makeup.
Does your artist have a portfolio of brides they've worked on in the past?

That seems unusually fast. My salon is sending 1 stylist for hair and 2 for make up. I’ve got a total of 6 ladies, counting me, getting ready and they said a minimum of 4 hours of get ready time. Your stylist and MU artist should be taking longer on the bride, like much longer than 15-20 mins.

Def unusually fast. Ours scheduled 45 min per bridesmaid for hair, 1 hr for my hair. Same timing for makeup. They did tell me they had some buffer built in and tended to run ahead, and they did, but we ran through the buffer on other things so we still started the ceremony a little late just bc of having to corral people.
