Tipping a bridal consultant?

Vicki, on December 19, 2021 at 9:03 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 10
I just bought my dress yesterday. I paid by credit card and was completely caught off guard when the consultant said “if you like my service there is a place for a tip” and it popped up on the credit card screen, 5, 10, 15, or 20 %. My dress was $2600, so even a 5% tip is not an insignificant amount (and a whopping $520 for 20%!) I’ve never in my life heard of such a thing. I did tip her 5% but honestly I wasn’t prepared for the extra cost. (And there was no option for a custom amount.) Has anyone else experienced this? Is this common? Seems like the stores are just trying to pass off the cost of paying their employees to the bride. I am not anti-tip for the appropriate professions, and when it’s completely expected and customary, but this just blew my mind.

That is insane! I would be super put off too. She should be earning a healthy commission on her sale.

I think you absolutely nailed it…. The employer is trying to pass off the cost of paying their employees. Consultants should be making an hourly wage, plus commission on each dress sale. Not to mention it’s rather unprofessional/uncouth to put a customer on the spot about tipping like that.

This is absurd and absolutely shouldn’t be common. Its been a few years since I bought my dress, but I didn’t experience this and I’ve never seen this when shopping with any of my friends either. Also the fact that she purposely pointed it out to you feels icky to me. I tip when I want to. I don’t need to be shown how to do so.

She’s already making a commission from the sale. It is not expected or required to tip her, and it should not be a thing to consider in the first place. A tip is a thank you when someone goes above and beyond the call of duty, and a worker should never ask for one at any time. Personally I would have walked out the door at that point and purchased the dress elsewhere, as well as called the store to report the behavior, because that is completely uncalled for.

When I worked in bridal, I made minimum wage hourly, no commission. In three and half years, I had customers try to tip me twice. Both times I explained that it wasn’t necessary, and one kept their money, the other insisted. It’s not generally done, and certainly never suggested.

Eesh now I’m even more mad! I thought maybe I was just out of the loop. Sigh… ce la vie. She WAS a good consultant. And I did use two appointments and tried on a lot of dresses before ordering it, so I will just take consolation in that.

When I purchased my dress they did have a tip portion while I was paying. It was never pointed out to me though just popped up on the screen. I was able to put a custom amount as well so I just threw her $50 because I adored her. I would be super put off if it were pointed out to me.

What! That is a gross practice to have in place! I cannot imagine how a bridal salon can think that is ok.

Got a $2100 dress today. My mom paid but I got the receipt so I do know she tipped $50. I don’t know if that was custom choice, or an option on the screen. I wasn’t looking over her shoulder so I’m not sure. I do know they said we could skip and not tip and there was no pressure to tip which was nice

Yes this just happened to me, we were only asked to tip 15, 20, or 25% which is wild considering the cost of the dress we paid. We picked 20% but looking at the bill I’m like woah
