Tipping and Prep for Hair and Makeup Trial?

J, on February 7, 2018 at 3:23 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 4
I believe I need to tip my hair and makeup artist for my wedding, correct? If so, do I also need to tip her when I have my trial? What is a proper amount to tip her? I usually tip around 20% at a salon so I was thinking that could be a good amount?

Also, this is kind of a silly question, but do I need to do anything to prepare for the trial other than pinning photos of hair and makeup that I like? I presume I should have clean dry hair without any products and no makeup on? Or maybe she would like to see my everyday makeup? I will make sure I have my veil with me so we can put in on and see how it looks with my hair style.

Yes, you need to tip at both your trial and on the day of. 20% is a good amount.

I'd ask your stylist what she prefers. Most updos actually hold better if the hair is not freshly washed (about 1-2 days old) since it will grip better. I'd suggest no makeup but, you can ask about that too. Yes, bring your veil and your inspiration photos.

Thank you! That’s very interesting about not washing hair for an updo, I did not know that. Thanks again!

20% is standard, I think, for most wedding vendor tips (except your caterer which is usually based on headcount). I'm going to tip mine somewhere around there (for myself & 4-5 other people). Total will be around $600-700 so I'll tip between $120-150 depending on how the day goes & the fact she's bringing a second person. That price also include my trial, which is included in the package.

How your trial goes varies by hairdress/mua so it's best to ask them their preferences. Some want clean hair, while some want unwashed. Some want you to come in your base, some want a clean face.

I tipped 20% at my hair trial ($30) and 20% on the day of my wedding ($60). The way I saw it was she was taking time out of her schedule to work with me. When I showed up both my trial and the day of my wedding, I had only moisturizer on and I had clean dry hair. She appreciates the fact that I told her what I normally wore makeup wise everyday but it was easier for her to work with without wearing anything
