Tipping hair and makeup artists

summerbride17, on June 27, 2017 at 11:07 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 5

So, I have one main hair stylist and two assistants, plus a makeup artist and one assistant. My question is regarding how to divide the tip. Do I pay ~20% on the final cost of each service and let both artists split it up among themselves and their assistants, or do I have to distribute a tip to each individual? Thanks!

You tip them individually in an envelope not cash in hand. The amt to tip an assistant kinda depends on what that assistant is actually doing if they are cleaning brushes between people I would tip differently vs if they were helping to set my hair or makeup.

Great question, following! I would think the artists get more than the assistants, but not sure...

I tipped both of our hair and both makeup artists the same--except a little more for the main MUA who coordinated with the whole beauty team-and was just a rockstar in general. I wrote each of them a thank you note with cash inside--I think $50 for each, and $75 for the head one)

ETA: I also would clarify on what you mean by assistants- do you mean additional artists that they are bringing for the day that will do other peoples hair and makeup? or truly an assistant that is cleaning brushes, prepping stations, etc? If the latter--tip less...otherwise give them a good tip.

Thanks for the feedback. I have 10 others getting hair and makeup done besides me, so the assistants are there to actually provide the services.

Maybe I wasn't supposed to...but they were in a rush to get going and I wasn't sure what portion her assistant was getting paid...so I just added 20% to the total cost and gave it all to my HMUA and figured she would distribute it between them.

My main HMUA did mine and my sisters makeup and then her and her assistant alternated all of us with doing hair so I really wasn't sure how to sort it out.
