Tipping Hair/makeup stylist on top of fee?

on August 28, 2020 at 7:24 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 1 10
So I’m having a girl come for makeup and hair from a salon to my hotel. They are charging $100 per service plus a $400 onsite fee. I assume I have to pay for their parking as well ($44 each - downtown Boston!). My question is do I need to tip as well? Normally I would say 20% no problem but I’m already giving them $500. I don’t want to stiff them. Just need some advice.

I personally don't think the fees should affect their tip. You should tip based on performance 15%-20%.

Yes I would say you need to tip as well. We had to pay parking for my makeup artist as well (also in a major downtown city) but she offered to use Spothero so her parking ended up being like $25 instead of the $60 it would have cost to park at our hotel. So that saved us a little bit.

You tip based on the quality of service. Did they go above and beyond or just show up with nothing special?

I would still tip, but I would let her know about the parking situation and see what she says. I wouldn’t assume my client would pay for that, if I was the artist.

...follow-up: the parking I’d assume is wrapped up in the “on site fee”, it’s part of getting onto the site?

Call/email to be sure. Better to get all the details than to assume.

I assumed but I should definitely double check.

Yes I would recommend double checking and/or checking your contract. My contract stated very clearly that we'd have to pay for the MUA's parking but if yours doesn't mention anything then maybe this is already covered

In general, if it was gratuity that was added, I wouldn't tip on top of that. If it's a service fee, I would give a tip. Since it's an on-site fee and not gratuity, I would still give a tip in this case. Double check with them on the parking fee though - that may be covered by the on-site fee.
