Tips for shopping for mua

Natasha, on December 5, 2019 at 12:29 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 3

Hi brides! I want your input for tips and questions I should ask a makeup artist before committing to a trial. Note: I am not looking to spend a fortune on trials until I find the "one."

I had very bad experience working with an MUA before, mostly due to two issues:

- MUA not familiar with East Asian features (but said they would be ok with it), and came out funny looking.

- How to actually spot the real "pros." My previous MUA basically used the makeup I brought and her hands (no tools) and had no idea what she was doing. Half way through she said she doesn't "usually do makeup"...after charging me $140. Mind you that she owned a salon...

I did two trials before booking ($180 total for two hair and makeup trials). I emailed around 20 hair & makeup artists in my area that had 5 star ratings on Wedding Wire or The Knot. I asked their pricing and if they were in budget, I looked further into their websites & their reviews & how professional they were via email. I only looked at artists that did both hair and makeup, ones that could supply other artists since I needed more than 1 for all of us, ones that would travel to the venue, ones that didn't require a huge deposit, and ones that had real websites.

I think you should flat out ask them do they have experience with that. I'm African-American and every time I've been a bridesmaid I've usually been the only black one. When my Caucasian Brides book makeup artist I asked him do they have the products necessary for African Americans. I don't think it's wrong to say hey I have these kind of features do you know how to accommodate that. I would definitely look for an mua that has some kind of portfolio or Instagram where you can see their work.

    Hey Natasha!

There are a huge number of MUAs in the WeddingWire vendor directory that have experience working with brides of all different ethnicities. I’d love to help by finding some for you. What state/city are you in?
