Tips for summer weddings?

Emily, on April 18, 2021 at 3:35 PM Posted in Planning 0 9
Would love to hear all your tips for outdoor summer weddings. I’m getting married in August in Oregon, which is usually pretty nice, but there’s also the rare chance of a rainy day OR a scorching hot day. 😂

My daughter got married outdoors last August in CA (fortunately a week before the wildfires started). It was a 92 degree day. Fortunately, it was a morning wedding/brunch reception so the temperature wasn't unbearable. We provided hand held fans ($1.00 each Oriental Trading Co) and the venue had parasols for the guests during the ceremony. The reception was under a canopied tent (with electric and industrial fans) as well as surrounded by shaded trees.

Oregon wedding here too (So. OR, June 2022). No advice yet haha. I'm less worried about weather, and more worried about fire season/air quality--but there's not anything we can do about that. I'm hopeful that we can roll with whatever happens. Not sure where you are in OR, but I feel like you have a very slim chance of heavy rain in August. I'm going to make sure whatever I choose to wear is really breathable in case of hot/dry weather.

That’s a good idea! Where in southern Oregon are you getting married? We’re getting married outside of Portland and the venue manager told us that when he got married there in August (like 10 years ago), it rained in the morning 😂 Ideally it won’t be hotter than 85 and the fires here were bad last year, but there usually aren’t fires in the area every year. You should be free of fires in June! But that’s a good mindset, we really can’t control what happens with that.

We live in Portland but are getting married near Grants Pass (at a private campground called Cedar Bloom Farm) because half of our family and friends are down there. I will think good non-rain thoughts for you 😉. Wouldn’t be Oregon without a few random showers.

I'd start watching the forecast about a week to ten days out. If it looks like there might be rain, you may want to have a tent on standby.

Also, SUNSCREEN! Be sure to have bottles on hand! For some reason, people just don't realize how quickly you can burn in the PACNW.

The main thing for me about getting married outside in Orlando in May that didn’t anticipate was that my feet would swell in the heat, making my previously comfortable heels soooo uncomfortable!

Have drinks available for your guests. When we got married, in July, outside, in Florida (yikes) we had the caterer set up the bar before the ceremony (I say "the bar" but it was a dry wedding, so it was all non-alcoholic drinks.) Our guests got water, iced tea, and lemonade.
