Tips on how to safely fly with formal attire?

I didn't travel with a wedding gown, but I have flown with a ball gown with a lot of crinoline. I vacuum packed it to save space. With a little fluffing, it was just fine. I think you have the right idea keeping your gown in your carry on. Just make sure it's locked.

You can bring a suit in a garment bag and ask the flight attendant to hang it up on the side. I know someone who just did that with a suit. Wedding dress might be too big. If it’s a poofy dress I might even consider putting it in it’s own suitcase with nothing else in it and then steaming it when you get to your destination.

The bit of a problem with the carry on is that you have to race for the next flight carrying it with you. Plus, the two flights have to have room to hang it up. The dedicated suitcase might be good but you possibly incur additional cost for that luggage on the flights.
