Tips/Tricks for destination wedding flights

ptmos645, on June 24, 2016 at 5:12 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 8

Hi everyone,

I'm new to WeddingWire but I had a question. my fiancé are planning our destination wedding to Punta Cana and we have Dreams Punta Cana on the top of our list but we are trying to figure out flights now. Does anyone have any tips?

I know about airfarewatchdog but that's about it. I've also heard about airfordable but I don't know anyone who has used it so I'm a little leery.

Websites such as Travelocity and Expedia allow you to set a fare watch which will alert you when flights go on sale. If you haven't already, check packages at cheapcaribbean.com or Apple Vacations where the flight might be cheaper if booked with the resort stay.

I would wait until September to book flights. Most airlines don't become competitive on their fares until the flight is 3-4 months out. Additionally, September (after Labor Day) tends to be a time when the airlines have price wars. This also happens in early January (after Christmas) and in late spring (after Easter/spring break).

    Thank you Pani,

One of my friends told me that maybe i should get a credit card that has a mileage reward bonus for signing up. I will make sure to mark our calendar for those timeframes!

I have booked vacation packages through expedia and have found them to be cheaper than any other site. Good luck Patrick Smiley smile

We're flying Southwest to Punta Cana for our honeymoon and they were much cheaper than flights on Expedia. We have to travel 3 hours to the airport but so worth it. Maybe check JetBlue too

@matt I'm not against travel agents. I just thought i may be able to do it myself. Travel agents offer payment plans right? For the flight and hotel. I think expedia does.

I also second Southwest Airlines if nothing else for the 2 free checked bags!

I second cheapcaribbean and checking for flights in September and January. I would also recommend contacting the airlines directly for group bookings, they sometimes have deals and payment plans for groups. You may luck out with a travel agent and even working with the resort directly for group rates. I am comparing all my options to see what's most affordable and then I will present to guests via the website.

We always recommend including the air in the hotel package. this way it's all covered under the trip insurance. If you book the air independently, then you have to have two policies, which in the end can cost you more.
