tn law change - online ordained ministers no longer legal

Misty, on June 24, 2019 at 8:16 AM Posted in Tennessee Planning 0 3
Hey gang. Any of my Tennessee brides out there?!

Tennessee state law changed and will go into effect July 1... they are no longer allowing someone ordained online to marry legally.

How are you guys working this out?! Our very good friend is marrying us (online ordained). Do we have to go down to the courthouse the day before to legally get it done?

Super unfortunate and changes things for us for sure. Could use some thoughts!

I'm pretty sure this has always been a thing... We started planning over a year ago and were told this from the get go. We are having a friend marry us and we will have an officiant there. Officiant will over see the ceremony and let our friend perform it and then he will be the one to sign our wedding license. He says they have to do it all the time for this exact reason.

Hey Misty! I’m sorry that this information has only surfaced to you now. I’m sure it is very inconvenient and changes your wedding ceremony plans.

If the law now states that only certain people can perform a legal marriage, I would say that you should either find an officiant to perform your actual ceremony and perhaps ask your good friend to say some words at the beginning/end of your ceremony or reception. Or you could go to the courthouse to legally marry in advance of your planned wedding day and have your friend perform a symbolic ceremony.

I've considered all of that for sure. We are just not religious and do not want the ceremony to reflect beliefs that we do not share. It seems the only way to do that at this point is to ask a judge.
