To cruise or not to cruise...

Hollyberry, on November 5, 2015 at 4:19 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 35

We are leaning towards a cruise, but are getting so much advice on where to go, which line to use, etc. Since you all are the people going through these decisions too, or have gone through this decision process recently:

1. Where are you going?

2. Why or why not a cruise?

3. If you are doing a cruise, what cruise line are you using and why? (if you aren't cruising for your honeymoon but have gone on one before, that advice would be great as well!! I have never been on a cruise)

4. What are you most excited for?!

The honeymoon daydreaming is so far one of the things I like best, but want to be careful in the actual planning because of $$! :-)

    1. I've been on two cruises

    2. FUCK NO! I got so fucking sea sick it was awful. I was convinced to try again with meds/band/patches and nothing worked. Never again. If this was my honeymoon I'd cry.

    3. We did Royal Caribbean

    4. Please don't make your first cruise a honeymoon (not directed at you OP, idk if you've cruised before)

We went to Riviera Maya, Cancun at an all inclusive resort and it was reasonably priced. Didn't go on a cruise because last time I went on one I got sea sick and didn't want to risk that for our honeymoon. Just to have week just the 2 of us was absolutely incredible.

We haven't decided on what we're doing yet, but I think cruising is awesome!! It's a great value overall, great food, tons to do and see and you can really do as much or as little of it as you choose. Keep in mind you'll be amongst a lot of people, so sometimes lines for the buffet can be long or seating in the shows can be hard to find, but it's overall a great idea.

I've been on Carnival a bunch of times and Royal Caribbean once. My preference is Carnival; it's super fun and is the most cost friendly. I've heard great things about Celebrity and Princess, too.

Since we've been on a cruise before, I think we're leaning towards an all-inclusive on one of the Caribbean islands instead so that we won't be amongst quite so many people and have a little bit more freedom in terms of what we want to do and when we want to do it during the day. But, we haven't entirely rule the cruise idea out yet.

ETA: I get sea sick VERY easily and I've never had a problem with sea sickness on a cruise. The boats are so large and they have stabilizers that help you to not feel the motion too much (you'll feel it more when you are laying in bed if you are towards the top decks).

I am not cruising for my honeymoon but I used to cruise frequently. My parents still cruise once a month. In my opinion, cruises are a great way to see a lot of places in a short amount of time. It is also a good way to see a place that is somewhat expect like Bermuda. I would not take a cruise if you really want to get a feel for what a place is really like. My favorite cruise line is Celebrity. I like Royal Caribbean as well but it's way more casual. I absolutely will never set foot on a Carnival ship ever again but a lot people enjoy them. I think their service is sub par and the ships are not very nice. Princess and Norwegian are also great (based on my parents' experiences. My favorite cruise destinations are Bermuda, Alaska, St. Thomas, Hawaii, St. Marteen. Stay away from Nassau or the Bahamas in general unless you are going to a private island.

I have been on 4 cruises. The first one I got sick and a Dr. told me what to do not to sick again. I have used this technique and have never been sick again. AND 2 of my cruises were during hurricanes and still didn't get sick. They were all on Carnival and I loved all of them.

Here is the trick. You need to take these pills called Bonnie. You start taking them everyday a week an a half before you leave. Continue to take them when you are on the ship and you will be fine. The Dr. told me that the meds need to build up in your system before they work, that if you take them once you are feeling sick it is already too late.

I have cruised with all of newbies, including my sister who gets sick if you look at her wrong and we all have been fine.

I have been to Mexico, a couple Caribbean and Jamaica.

    1. We just got back on Sunday from our HM cruise and it was great. We left from Tampa, went to Roatan, Belize, Costa Maya, and Cozumel

    2. I thought it was great! I didn't get sea sick at all, I could barely tell the ship was moving. The main thing for me was the cruise made me relax and chill out, we had excursions already picked out at 3 of the 4 ports so I didn't have to think too much while I was on vacation, which was great for our honeymoon

    3. Norwegian Cruise Line

Yes, I'm going on a cruise a year from tomorrow! We delayed our honeymoon to get the itinerary we really wanted on the line we wanted.

    1. We are going to Aruba, Bonaire, Grenada, Dominica, St. Thomas, and Grand Turk - it will be a 10 day itinerary.

    2. Cruising isn't for everyone BUT I do think everyone should try at least a short one. I was so skeptical the first time I took a cruise. I still like land travel but I like to jump from one place to another. I knew for my honeymoon I would want to go someplace tropical and visit beaches and rainforest, but I didn't necessarily want to stay on one resort or in one country the entire time. I am happy anytime I travel, but for our honeymoon it was what we really wanted. There was a brief moment where I found an amazing deal on a China trip, but I wanted our honeymoon to be relaxing - this year I'm dealing with finishing my bachelor's, employment changes, and my dad is undergoing cancer treatment. I wanted beaches and islands.

    3. I'm cruising on Princess. My past three have been on them and they trend a bit older but I like the ships and the price was great. We booked a balcony room and as a perk, got an all inclusive beverage package for each of us. That alone was valued at 1100 if we had purchased it outright. To me, getting that thrown in puts it on par with an all-inclusive resort.

    4. I get to go to Bonaire and snorkel and also to Dominica and see the spectacular scenery, which is what I've been dying to do. I'm looking forward to revisiting some islands I've been to before and have either loved or the weather wasn't as great the last time, so now we get a do over. Smiley smile

If you do decide to cruise - lots of travel no longer has much of a benefit by booking with a dedicated travel agent, but cruising is still the exception. By booking with a travel agent, I got a lower price on a higher category cabin and also got $50 in on board credit (which we will apply towards our gratuities) and also chocolate covered strawberries thrown in. Airline prices are the same whether you book with an agent or not, but if you find an agent who books a high volume of whatever line you're looking at sailing, you will get a better price than the website.

EDIT: also our flights will be free to Florida from our credit card points. Flying domestically is much cheaper than internationally.

We are planning an adult only all-inclusive resort, hopefully in Cancun. I won't dona cruise because of environmental issues and my experience with the passengers in port when I go to KW every year.

DO NOT cruise with Carnival. The worst.

I don't think I would like a cruise for a honeymoon because you have no privacy. Everywhere you go, whether its the beach or to dinner, there are 300 other people there.

We haven't planned our HM yet, but I've cruised multiple times so here are my thoughts:

    1. I've been to the Mediterranean, Florida & the Caribbean, Bahamas & Mexico, and Hawaii.

    2. I think Cruising is FUN. They usually have a bunch of activities, food's included so eat as much as you want, and it can be a fun way to see many different places. I like to hang out on the deck, in the sun, drinking Smiley smile I don't get sea sick at all, so it works for me.

    3. My preference is Norwegian (NCL). I like their Freestyle cruising, where you can just show up for dinner. I've heard Royal Caribbean (RC) is great too, but they don't do freestyle cruising (you have assigned dinner times & tables). If you are extroverted and don't sitting with other people at dinner, this is for you! If you're like me where eating dinner with strangers gives you anxiety, go with Freestyle! I advise against Carnival. I've never had a worse vacation experience than the cruise I went on with them. I'm NCL all the way! NCL, and I understand RC too, offer a lot of activities on board in evenings, during the day if you want to stay on the ship, both free/included and some for a fee.

    4. I love relaxing on cruises and picking excursions. You don't have to do excursions in every port, but sometimes it's fun. I went river cave tubing in Belize, swam with stingrays in Grand Cayman, explored religious sites in Turkey...but in Mexico it was fun to get off the ship and just walk around Cozumel, no organized excursion.

We're cruising on Carnival! I'm so excited. It's both of our first time on a cruise and we both had always wanted to go on one. We will be stopping in Jamaica, Grand Cayman and Cozumel. We love the idea of seeing several places, having all our food and lodging included along with tons of fun sounding activities to do on the ship. We've heard Carnival isn't the most glamorous but since we are first time cruisers we think it will be exciting and fun for us regardless.

I've been on 3 cruises, 2 Carnival, one RC. It is a nice affordable vacation as everything but drinks are included. The activities on the ship are plentiful, or you can sit and relax. We had the most fun going to the different bars and watching the comedians. The downside to cruising is the food. RC's food was good, but predictable, Carnivals food was so bad, we dreaded our next meal. We basically ate just to stay alive. Choose your ports carefully. Some are horrible. Grand Cayman comes to mind here. St. Marten and the virgin islands are good, though it's been years since I've been there. I hate being herded around like cattle at every port. I also hate watching the time to make sure we catch the ship before it leaves. That being said, it is the only vacation we will ever take our kids on. They can have some independence without being on our timetable. It works out great. Oh, and if you have never been to Bermuda, go! It is beautiful! I hear the NCL breakaway is a good ship for that destination.

I've have been on 3 cruises and love them! It's nice cause the newer ships are so big you don't even realize you are moving. They can be expensive rooms are small but the staff goes out of they way to make you happy and food is wonderful. All 3 times I went with Royal Ceribean they are very nice to deal with. For our HM we decided to just do go to Aruba and not do a cruise. I will tell you cruises can be very buys and stuff always going on .....not that's that's a bad thing but we wanted to just go to a all inclusive and relax. Cruises are great but drink packages can be very expensive.

I've done about five of them. If I did it again, I'd do a river cruise with actual destinations I wanted to see. (Not a big island person....)

I will only ever cruise on Holland America. My grandfather worked very high up for years with the company so I know the quality they provide. They are a bit more pricey but completely worth it. I've been on one Holland America cruise to Alaska and one NCL to the Bahamians. HA line was far more high quality. Planning on taking FH on a similar cruise in the next few years. I've never gotten see sick. There are a ton of people but the ships are massive, there are definitely private areas and quiet time.

I have been on 5 cruises, all with Disney, with a 6th cruise booked for 2017. I know some people are afraid to book with DCL because they think it's only for families with kids, and yes, there are a lot of family oriented things...but, the service onboard is impeccable. Only on our honeymoon cruise did I feel ill, but I was also fighting a viral head thing, so my inner ear was way off. I would say if you decide to cruise, pick where you want to go first, then price out different companies. Also, if you are at all worried about being sea sick, do the bonnine/dramamine thing as someone said above. My fav thing about cruising is seeing different places without having to unpack/repack. Plus the spas and food tend to be awesome too.

Definitely a cruise. We are taking the small cruise ships to the Bahamian Out Islands. Last year I went with my family for a vacation there and it was awesome. The beaches out there are really magical and are perfect for honeymoon. I guess there are small cruises available during the coming months. You should really consider it.

We've done the same 3 night cruise to Mexico out of Tampa (Carnival) twice on Carnival and one 3 night to Bahamas out of Miami (NCL). I liked the cruises because I put my phone in the safe and unplugged for 4 days (really 3). I found Carnival had more to do on the ship, but it may have also been attributable to the fact that the NCL ship was small. The Carnival trip had 2 sea days, which is basically where you sit and relax and get some sun. NCL was 2 ports in 2 days, so I felt like we were rushing around more to see stuff. We def. also spent more money in the ports as bars/restaurants/excursions are not included! I was actually pretty tired after the Miami trip because we never really relaxed. I developed vertigo after the last trip. Not sea-sick so much, but for like a month or two after the trip, I'd be sitting at my desk and feel like I was going to fall out of my chair. Or I'd start walking down the hallway sideways.

PS. I've been told, and it makes sense, if you're prone to sea sickness to get an interior room lower in the ship, Not only are they less expensive, but they're closer to the point the ship sways back and forth from, so you aren't moving as much as rooms closer to the top/sides.

For our HM, we're going to an all inclusive in Jamaica. With all the restaurants, etc. and beach, it'll kind of be like being on a cruise, except on dry land.

If you've never been on one, I'd def. recommend it. We always had a good time.

I've been on three cruises and I really enjoyed them all. The best customer service was, by leaps and bounds, Celebrity. I also enjoyed NCL because of the freestyle dining, which can make the cruise more casual and fun. One of our best memories is on our NCL cruise to Bermuda - one of the days we were in port, FH and I came back to the ship early, and there was almost no one but the crew on the ship. We sat in the hot tub, had some drinks, and watched the sunset over the Atlantic ocean. It was so romantic. On the same trip, we went sea kayaking, explored an historic fort, went to the beach, ate at amazing restaurants, and saw whales swimming off the coast of New England. We are doing a 3-night DCL cruise for our honeymoon and might not even leave the ship, we just want to relax and enjoy ourselves (before a week at the Disney parks!)

If you feel a little queasy, get outside for some fresh air and look at the horizon. That always helped me.
