I will always recommend hiring a professional. You may be great at your everyday makeup, but unless you're skilled at doing makeup that will be photographed by a high quality professional camera, it's not going to look the same.

I agree with Caytlyn. I think a professional is going to know what looks best when you are being photographed for your wedding. You will likely have spent a bunch of money on professional photos so you will want to look your best. My recommendation since you are nervous about how a professional would do your makeup is to have a trial. I had a trial for hair and makeup and I'm glad I did because I ended up deciding I wanted my makeup lighter than I originally intended. I had originally wanted a bright red lipstick, but it looked nothing like me so I changed it to a more muted tone.

Unless you are already highly experienced using highend makeup for photography, hire a professional. Take a look at Thumbtack.com for vendors in your area.

I had my makeup done for engagement photis and I hated the way I looked in person but loved it in pics. I'm leaning towards doing my own or not wearing makeup at all for my wedding day.

I would also recommend hiring a professional and doing a trial beforehand to make sure you like their work. (Most MUAs include this in their wedding packages).

With how hectic our day was, I cannot imagine trying to focus on doing my own makeup.

Girl it’s your wedding day! Treat yourself to getting done up without you doing any of the work. The only thing you need to be doing on your wedding day is pouring your champagne in a flute.

I would hire someone because they know exactly how to do “bridal” makeup. You may be good at doing your own makeup on a normal day but it probably wont come out the same in pictures and lighting as bridal makeup from a pro would. Also you can do as many trials as you want and bring inspo pictures til you find what you like

I’m a makeup artist, Ive worked for Tom Ford cosmetics, Chanel, Becca..all the big brands so I am very knowledgeable and skilled work artistry but I knew I did not want to do my own makeup. Hire someone and be pampered and showered on your big day. You won’t regret it. Do a trial with the artist just to go over everything you want to ensure that you’re 100% happy. Book the trial before signing a contract so if you are unhappy, you are able to do a trial with other artists and aren’t having to terminate the contract afterwards

I did my own makeup for my engagement photos and for my small backyard wedding. I never wear makeup so I wanted to do my own makeup and look natural not all done up. Also my friend had hers done professionally as a bridesmaid and hated it and it all melted off (summer) and she hated the fake lashes. My professional photos came out beautiful and I look like me which was really important to me. To me it seems like an unnecessary expense but I guess it depends on the person

This is what happened to me when i was a bridesmaid and i looked absolutely terrible in the pictures. I guess I'm not used to heavy makeup!

But thank you everyone for your input, i guess I just am so picky when it comes to my face that I don't want to blame anyone if it doesn't come out how i want it, and just don't want to spend money on something i can do myself. But i should treat myself lol.

I have been having this dilemma as well. I'm getting married in August and I have booked hair and makeup, but my fiance and I are trying to buy a house so I was going back and forth on whether to cancel my appointment or not. But I did finally decide on keeping my appointment, I figured it would be nice to have a professional do it and its very rare that I get to pamper myself.

I think I'm in the minority, but I don't think professional makeup is necessary. I think it may depend more on the style of photography you want. Some wedding photography has a brighter, more pastel, almost washed-out look. In that case wearing professional makeup may help give your face definition. But other styles of photography that are more journalistic and less...ethereal, I guess, don't require pro makeup, in my opinion. My sister is a professional photographer and stands firmly behind the belief that you don't need heavy makeup for your wedding. And she's taken plenty of pro photos of me with minimal makeup and they look great 🤷🏻‍♀️. If you know what you like, I think you're fine doing it yourself!

I'm planning on doing my own makeup on my wedding day. I would say I'm pretty confident in myself otherwise I wouldn't plan on doing it myself. I'm pretty sure I'm going to get eye lash extensions for the big day as well. Lash extensions can make the whole look come together. Also if you are planning on doing your own makeup I would practice a few times before the actual wedding day. Watch YouTube tutorials too! There's so many bridal looks on there that can help you if you need a little extra advice. I'm really picky when it comes to how my makeup looks and I already know if I went and had someone else do it I wouldn't like it so it would just be a waste of time and money.

I did my own makeup and practiced for weeks leading up to the wedding day. My FH said it was the best makeup he'd ever seen on me and quite honestly looking at the pictures even I was impressed with my talents. If I had to do it all again, I'd do the same thing. I'm so happy with the way my makeup came out for my rehearsal and wedding day, I wouldn't want to waste $100s of dollars on it and have a look that didn't represent my true self.

I personally wouldn't do my own makeup for my wedding day. Even for my minimony I got my hair and makeup professionally done.

I wouldn’t stress myself out if I were you. I stressed so much the week of the wedding (Including the night before). As soon as I sat in my MUA’s chair that morning and she started working on my face, my anxiety went out the window and I was able to relax! I let her do her thing while I drank a mimosa with my girls. Treat yourself to a MUA; it’s worth it.

I didn't plan on getting my makeup done because me and my husband were being very budget conscious. In the end, it was just easier to get it done, since my MOH was getting hers done at the same place we were getting our hair done. The makeup was definitely heavier than what I normally wear, but the artist was very good at checking in with me at each step to make sure she was adhering to my wishes for how I looked that day. I liked it, but I haven't seen photos yet, so I hope it photographed well. I did my own makeup for my engagement photos, though, and I had no issues with how I looked. If it's not in your budget or you have a strong aversion to the idea, I wouldn't worry about it.

I think I will end up doing my own makeup. I’m going back and forth, but I know I want a specific lip colour, so if I use a MUA I would bring that along. I also have dry skin and a lot of foundations and concealers can accentuate dry flakes on me. So then do I also bring my own complexion products. I also wear a specific type of lashes/glue, so I just figure what’s the point of paying an MUA if I bring all of my own makeup.

I say depending upon your budget, if it is possible, to definitely look into getting your makeup done by someone. Take your time and do lots of research along with the trial run to make sure he/she is in tune with the look that you are going for on your wedding day.
