To Double Shuttle or Not

Zoe, on November 18, 2021 at 1:38 PM Posted in Planning 0 8
Hey there! My fiancé and I are getting married in a church in downtown Sonoma, and hosting the 150-person reception at our friends’ private estate 2.6 miles away. They’ve gifted us their property for the wedding, and asked that we just not have anyone park there, besides older family members. Is it reasonable to provide only 1 shuttle to and from the venue, as well as suggest that people take a ride share from the church, where people can leave their cars, and invite those 65+ to park at the property? The cost of shuttles in this area is prohibitively high, otherwise I’d just go for 2 shuttles right off the bat. Thank you in advance!

I think if you’re making it impossible for people to drive themselves to your venue, you should be providing transportation to all guests. I would do a second shuttle or I would do Uber or Lyft codes for everyone.

Keep in mind how long rideshares might take up there on a Saturday too. I'd be a little peeved if I had to wait 25 mins for an Uber because the one shuttle was full and I wasn't allowed to take my car.

Maybe look at renting old school busses?

I understand why they wouldn't want people parking there, but if some guests are allowed to drive and others are not, some people may be resentful. I would definitely do the two shuttle system and perhaps Uber/Lyft codes as well (so that people can leave when they like, not when the shuttle is scheduled.

No. If you are not allowing for parking, you need to be providing transportation. Can you get a shuttle that can make multiple trips ?

I agree with this. My additional concern would be the risk of cars being towed away from the church. You will have some guests who don’t want to take a shuttle or Lyft and drive themselves. Also what is the cutoff for “older guests”? Because you are giving them different rules that don’t apply to the majority and older guests generally prefer to be chauffeured especially after dark.

Is there any place near the venue where you could rent parking space. Then you could hire a valet service to park the cars there. We had this for an event and it worked out great. We rented the parking lot of a school that was closed for the day.

I agree, if you literally cannot park at the reception site, then you need to provide everyone ample transportation. And, you need to provide more than one time to leave. At a recent wedding they had shuttles back to the hotel every 45 minutes for the last 2.5 hours of the reception.

Since you saved money on the venue, its important to spend some on the transportation situation.
