To Honeyfund or not to Honeyfund?

Brittany, on July 12, 2017 at 8:45 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 92

Hey all,

I'm trying to figure out if we should set up a Honeyfund in lieu of gifts. We are not setting up a gift registry as we lived separately before we met and so have two of nearly everything.

But our friends and family have been asking me what they should get.

Has anyone used Honeyfund before? Was it worth it?

Thank you!

I'm not even finished with my coffee yet...

No. Honeyfunds are rude. If you don't want to have a registry, don't have one but asking for people to fund your luxury honeymoon is generally frowned upon. Honeyfunds are also deceiving because when a guest thinks they're purchasing an excursion for you-they are not. You get the monetary value minus their processing fees. So if Aunt Betty thinks she's buying you a $200 jet ski excursion, she's really not. It's not fair for the guests.

    I didn't register and received all checks/cash.

Nope. just don't register and people will get the hint and give cash. Either way saying you want money doesn't look good no matter how you fold it.

I agree with the previous posters. It's entirely unnecessary and looks bad. If you have a small registry or even no registry, you will certainly get cash from your guests.

Gross. Don't use a honeyfund. Just don't register.

Don't do this. Asking for money is rude. Either don't register or have a small one. People will get the hint and give money.

You will not find any support on here for a honeyfund

Oy, this is a very biased source for opinions on honeyfunds. You may also want to poll friends and family about the issue. If you have to ask, that probably means you are feeling like it's not a great idea, and in that case don't.

@Ruth I'm pretty sure asking friends and family is more biased than asking strangers from all different regions. We have no emotional attachment to OP and won't answer in a matter not wanting to offend or hurt feelings.

"Hello friends and family. Would you like to give us money?"

You're going to get a real cross section here. Not your family who will basically tell you what you want to hear, most of the time.

Of course, you know everyone will say no to this idea. However, its your wedding and you can do whatever you like, but Im sure we all vote no. Create a small registry with limited items so they can give you cash/check instead to use on you honeymoon. Best wishes!

I think 'not to Honeyfund' is your answer.

Asking for money is tacky and can come off to guests as just using them for gifts or funds, which is rude. Don't do it.

OP, Honeyfund has the option to turn off the credit card payment option which charges you 2.8%, that way your guests can only give you cash/check and it's 100% free.
