To sell or not to sell?? Wedding Dress Dry Cleaning / Preservation - LA or OC

Sheila, on June 18, 2013 at 4:10 PM Posted in Married Life 0 10

Hi all,

I am still deciding whether I want to sell my couture Ines di Santo all French Alencon lace gown. I am leaning towards selling it. Do I have to dry clean the dress before selling it? If so, do I need to preserve the dress? Is it much more expensive to preserve the dress in addition to dry cleaning it?

What is the general range for dry cleaning an all lace dress (with silk tafetta under layer). There is no beading and no other embellshments.

Any recommendations for good dry cleaners for high end gowns in the Los Angeles and Orange County area would also be appreciated.

Thanks,

Sheila

I believe most bridal stores have an advertised listing for a company that will preserve the dress. I live in Fort Lauderdale fl and I have seen it at all the shops I have gone to. (which if I am not mistaken is dry cleaning the dress and putting it in a nice box). This will ensure that the gown will not fade or have any discoloration (should you keep it or if it takes a while for the dress to sell). Unfortunately I am not sure of the name of the company that does the preserving. I would do some checking around in your area at bridal stores. If you are looking at selling it I think really it is your choice weather or not you want to have it cleaned/preserved. It would be a nice gesture, I would think having a cleaned dress sounds more appealing for a potential buyer. People can be a bit weird when It comes to high priced used items and it not being cleaned. Think of it this way.. if you were going to buy a used Mercedes would you prefer to buy it detailed or the way someone left it?

I have been looking at purchasing a pre-owned dress and for my self I would prefer that it was already cleaned. Smiley smile

Thanks Alicia. I think I will definitely dry clean it. Need to do some research and get more recommendations on different cleaners in my area. Smiley smile

I listed my dress for sale on oncewed.com and did have it professionally cleaned ($125) but not preserved after the wedding.

On a side note, has anyone ever sold a gown on one of those sites? How long did it take? Seems like I am getting a lot of scam emails (will send certified check after courier picks up dress) from it and no serious inquiries. (I'm not falling for it - the site recommends escrow.com, but have not used that either.)

I sold my Romona Keveza french alencon lace over silk taffeta dress on Once Wed. It took 3 weeks from initial posting to $$ in my pocket. I used escrow.com and not paypal since paypal is not seller friendly and it worked out fine.

I had the dress dry cleaned, not preserved. It was $200 in Santa Monica for cleaning and repairing a few small tears in the lace. I am obviously a proponent of selling Smiley smile

I used oncewed.com and did not pay for the upgrades. I told myself if it took longer than a month then I would post on the sites that charge money. Fortunately, that didn't happen.

Thanks, that is helpful, K. I also have it listed on Craig's List. Like you, I don't want to pay for posting if I don't have to.

    K.,

What cleaner did you use in Santa Monica? Do you recommend them?

    Thanks for all the info!

I sold my dress without cleaning it. (I fully disclosed this to the buyer, and sent her my article on how to clean a dress yourself.) I bought my dress for $450 and sold it for $225. Getting it professionally cleaned it would have cost around $150. My view was that there was no way I could have raised the price of the dress to $375 to cover the cost of cleaning, when I had bought it for only $450.
