To the (Classical) Musicians out there: Non-cliché music suggestions?

pianoNYK, on March 5, 2009 at 2:58 PM Posted in Planning 0 7

We don't want the Wagner "Here Comes the Bride," Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring," the Pachelbel Canon, or any mvm't of Vivaldi's "Spring" (or Winter's 2nd Mvm't). I'm looking for something "classy" but not overplayed.

Tentatively we have the Brandenburg Concerto (No. 3) & Vivaldi's Autumn (1st Mvm't) for the prelude; both are still too cliché for my FH's tastes, but the Brandenburg has sentimental value for me, and Autumn is less common than Spring (and at least it doesn't show up whenever I google "wedding music").

I'm thinking about the Bach Cello Suite No. 1 or excerpts from Haydn's (Cello) Concerto for the processional and/or Bride's Entrance.

I'm leaning towards Vivaldi's Autumn, 3rd Mvm't for the recessional, because I like the balance of using the opening & closing mvm'ts of the same piece for the beginning & end of the ceremony.

Any other suggestions? I think I'm leaning towards baroque / early classical. Thanks!

Try some of the classics on guitar. They change them up a bit to fit the way the guitar has to be played. Gives a new twist on the classics.

    Hello!

I love your choices for music so far! The Four Seasons by Vivaldi is one of my favorite works. For my own wedding, we had many of the pieces you have already listed, simply because I liked them, and they were traditional. I enjoy classical music, so that worked out well. We also used "Air on a G String", "Ave Maria", and a few other contemporary pieces. If you are leaning towards baroque pieces, be sure to look into Mozart, and also the soundtrack from Marie Antoinette. There are songs from that time period that would fit your needs well.

Hope that helps! Enjoy your planning!

    I have the same question!!

Except all the pieces listed so far (Ave maria, air, vivaldi, bach cello suites, etc) are still all very cliche. My fiancee and I hold performance degrees.

Any out of the box ideas? We'll be doing recordings, not live music.
