To Wear Engagement Ring or Not on Vacation

MalibuBride, on December 16, 2019 at 3:58 PM Posted in Married Life 0 17

Has anyone worn their engagement ring to Puerta Vallarta or on a tropical trip? Heading there in a few days. It's a great beach side resort town on the Pacific side of Mexico. We went 2 years ago before the engagement and we felt very safe there. I'm not thinking about someone trying to steal my ring but more so, if something happens when I snorkel or paddle board. I usually wear my ring when I travel to Europe and even wore it in Mexico City last month. Would love feedback from my travel savvy brides!

I would want to wear mine but it would probably be safer to buy a silicone ring to wear during the activities so you don't risk something happening to it or losing it.

I wear a silicon ring (Enso ring) just because I wouldn’t want to swim in it, or have to worry about it on vacation.

I never wear mine on trips. Mine is insured but the center stone is from my great great grandmother so it would never really be the same. I have a silicone ring and a $10 CZ ring that I alternate bringing on trips.

I would not do activities or swimming with any jewelry. Even for our honeymoon I left my ring in the hotel room safe and only wore it out for dinner.

I've been on trips when engaged and I think I ended up just not wearing it. Because we did activities and I didn't want anything happening to it. I wore something else in place of it that I didn't care for.

I wore mine on our honeymoon (first trip after getting engaged/married). I kept my jewelery in the room safe during the day and wore it in the evening. I don't like swimming with jewelry because a. it can fall off in the water or something and b. weird tan lines.

We bought ourselves a cheap ring we could wear on vaca. It's actually super cute and only cost me $40 on Amazon.

I wore my ring to San Felipe and the whole time I was paranoid that I would loose it. I suggest you leave it at home to just have a peace of mind. I know I will be leaving mine when we go to Cancun for our honeymoon.

If we’re going on a trip where we’ll be mostly in or near the water (or doing other things where I don’t wear rings) then I just leave it safe at home. Locking it in a hotel room safe is out of the ordinary to me so I worry I’ll forgot to do it. Better to leave at home and travel care free.

That said, I used to work with a number of former law enforcement professionals and they recommended getting inexpensive, plain gold bands over getting the silicone rings. The silicone ring still signals that you likely have something nicer, and not all crimes of opportunity are to take the ring off your finger, the criminal might just suspect you have other valuables worth taking. So it’s all about blending in... no flashy jewelry, no silicone in place of your flashy jewelry, no designer brands, etc. 😊

When I went to Mexico, I left my engagement ring at home. I wasn't so much worried about theft but more concerned about it accidentally sliding off with all the pool and beach time combined with being greasy from sunblock. Might be a little late if you're leaving in a couple days but I ordered a cheap amazon ring that sort of looked like mine so I could still have a little sparkle when I dressed up at night for dinners. During the day, I wore one of the silicone rings.

Hotel safes are not SAFE.... Hotel staff have very easy ways of accessing room safes (people forget their code/lose a key/etc.). I've been married 32+ years and do not take my wedding/engagement set on vacations. I have a diamond anniversary ring that has a much lower financial/sentimental value that I wear. Daughter and SIL only wear their silicone rings and leave their real rings in their safe at home.

I wore my engagement ring on Mexico many times. Cabo, playa del Carmen, Cancun, Mexico City. No problems at all.

Thank you ladies for your comments!!! I actually figured out I will leave my ring at my jeweler's store which is just a half mile from our home. It will be safe and I won't get paranoid about a burglary at our home (which is so far fetched). But I will be wearing my wedding band to Puerta Vallarta (I do need to wear some bling). I feel safe wearing it in the pool or ocean. It's interesting to hear about silicone rings. I thought it was trendy for men as gym rings vs women.

I was advised by several friends and family members who have traveled worldwide to not wear expensive jewelry while traveling. It isn't so much that someone would snatch it off your finger, but it's a signal that you probably have other expensive belongings with you and therefore makes you more of a target for theft. I bought silicone bands and my husband bought a cheap plain silver band to wear on our honeymoon to Iceland. We locked our real rings up in a safe at my parents' house while we were away. Hotel safes are NOT safe!

For our honeymoon, hubby and I went to Cancun and let our rings at home because we knew we'd be doing a lot of water activities and just hanging by the beach. We did have silicone rings for our trip but even those we didn't wear half of the time. I just didn't see the point of taking it knowing I would be leaving it in my purse or whatever back in the room.
