Today I learned I should not check my registry to see what's being bought

Sylphier, on June 3, 2017 at 12:57 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 16

Not because it's bad or anything [I mean I know I'm ruining the surprise for myself but it's fun to watch now that things are actually being purchased] just because I put myself into shock and confusion tonight and will remain in this state until my wedding in two weeks.

You might be wondering why - well because tonight someone purchased 8 place settings of the fancy china I didnt think anyone would buy. We registered for 4 because we have a child and plan for one more and we have never had dinner company that warranted fancy dishes so we figured 4 is fine. So someone went and bought double what we asked for. At $50 a place setting.

FH and I can not figure out who in the heck would be crazy enough to spend so much on dishes for us. lol. So now I have to deal with 2 weeks of absolute confusion.

Moral of the story: Don't be like me and spoil the surprise or karma bites you in the butt by leaving you stunned for 2 weeks. Lesson learned. haha.

This post was more just to express my shock somewhere that it could be understood and not offend this mystery guest who spent $400 on table settings. I'm just... I don't even know how I am. Wow. That is a lot for 16 plates and 8 bowls...

Likely it was a close family member - mom, dad or FIL's - those are usually the folks that drop that kind of cash on something like place settings Smiley smile

Sometimes a group of people go in on something like this. You can relax though. $50 per place setting is actually very reasonable.

Some registries offer a "thank you notes" section. It allows you to see who has purchased items so you can keep track for thank you cards later.

Could also be a group gift. And while you only registered for four, you'll be grateful for 8 when one of the pieces inevitably breaks. My mom told me to get 2-4 more of any dish set than you think you'll use (China or every day) because of that very reason.

Could be a group gift. Could be a family member or secretly rich best friend lol. I'm usually pretty good at putting things ott of my mind when thinking about them can't help, but I can imagine that thinking about that all the time would be driving you crazy!

@FutureMrsR my mom can't afford half of that and father isn't in my life and FiLs got us the honeymoon or I would have suspected them.

@Muriel shh don't tell that to my $10 box of Walmart dishes. It's a lot of money, to me anyways haha.

@vee I looked all over mine and can't find that kind of option. It's with bed bath and beyond.

@Sarah Yeah the extra is nice, though our current home is very small so not really anywhere to keep it. I thought about group gift but can't imagine which people would group up to buy all that. Even split between people it's more than I know most of our list can afford. We registered for many small ticket items because many guests are low income or fixed income.

I know Macy's has this option. Another way to find out is to email them, if you're that curious/writing thank you cards.

Why are you stressing about this? No one is going to purchase a wedding gift that is outside of their means, so there is no reason for you to even worrry about it. And if it is from BB&B you will likely receive it in a few days if your own address is on the registry for delivery. The slip inside will tell you who purchased it.

    Just be appreciative!

Could it be possibly that person A bought it and it didn't get taken off the registry or marked as already bought and person B bought the same thing.

It happened with me and someone else when I bought something for a registry, Target didn't scan it off right when I handed them the paper.

@em I think you missed the point of my post. I'm not stressing, just crazy curious and shocked. Also I don t believe it's being shipped to my home, since my wedding is only 2 weeks away they'll probably bring it then. I'm grateful to whoever it was but it was still quite shocking.

@Ashley oh that's a thought! I know all 8 appeared last night but it is possible two people went for it before it was being scanned. Would be a really funny coincidence if so.

@Tabatha haha good luck resisting the temptation! I'm too much of a curious person so it'll be really hard not to look the next two weeks but after this, I have to try.

I assume its a group purchase. I mean I would not want to buy you one set. You normally need at least 8 if you were to host dinners anyways.

I am assuming given your shock that $400 is quite generous in your area.

Maybe they figured you would need more than 4 settings- the "recommended" amount of place settings is 12, in case you have company for holidays.

@VC not so much in my area but just in my circle of friends and family that were invited. All my side of the family is low income, and we've already received things from FH's side that can afford to spend more. All our friends work retail type jobs that don't pay well. So just, not expected from my invite list.

@MrsMcK thats entirely possible. Depending on the person they might not even realize that FH and I don't host things at our house but instead we usually go to the older family members homes. I don't think I could fit 12 people in my home if I tried haha.

@Jill that seems to be the general assumption now. I still can't picture any of our invitees grouping together to buy that but it's possible.
