Today is my parents 35th wedding anniversary!

MK, on October 8, 2012 at 12:06 PM Posted in Married Life 0 8

How amazing is that! Seems fitting that it would fall on Thanksgiving because I am so thankful for them!

Thought I'd share some things that I have learned from my parents relationship, most of which my mom has told me:

- pick your battles; some things are worth fighting over, some things are just not

- you don't have to tell each other everything - this one surprised me, but she wasn't talking about keeping secrets, she was talking about protecting one another

- be best friends first, laugh, enjoy each other

- be a team; growing up my parents were like one and I never heard one say a single bad word about the other

And then there's the other stuff, compromise, support, not holding grudges and above all love.

What have your parents taught you about love and marriage?

Aw what a sweet post Smiley smile My parents are married 38 years. I think by watching them, I have learned how to have patience, learning to compromise, talk things out when upset, and so much more!

My parent's had their 35th anniversary earlier this year. Their marriage has had it's ups-and-downs. When my parents fight, they don't hide it from us kids. Even through all of their differences, they are still together. It has taught me loyalty and tolerance. Seeing some of the problems in their marriage has also given me lessons in what not to do.

My grandparents made it beyond 50 years before my grandma passed. Their marriage is one that I like to use as an example. I never got to visit them much, so I haven't seen the daily ups and downs of marriage, but when I did get to spend time with them they always interacted with each other so sweetly. When my grandma got sick, it was really sweet watching my grandpa take care of her.

    MK R.

I think of a list like this often. I am so glad you posted it.

My parents have the same list. They add communication!

Talk about the little things that bother you BEFORE they become a FIRE!

Pick your battles is one. They always say is this a war you want to fight?

My Great great aunt said to fight in front of your kids, share money problems with them. Tell them NO and we can't afford it. She said they never had any fights in front of her kids or told them any problems. When they had a problem in their marriage each kid just got divorced.

    Remember life is short.

    Remember to say sorry.

Remember to say I love you, your not guarenteed tomorrow.

    Congrats to your parents!

Thank you for the advice! Seeing a couple together that long is a rare thing. You are very lucky to have such great examples to model after.

May God continue to bless them and their marriage.

My parents just celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary! They are High School Sweethearts and have been together for 40 years! They are still so madly in love and so happy to be together, it's so amazing to see. It gives me so much to look forward to and so much hope since FH and I are also High School Sweethearts.
