Too early to alter?

Llcool_Kay, on December 3, 2020 at 12:15 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 16
Long story short. I bought a sample dress because the only other dresses they had were way too small and not the color I wanted. The sample size is an 8 and I wear a 10 (I have wide hips LOL). At the store the seamstress said that the only thing I would most likely need some is letting the dress out. The store had a size 12 that swallowed me. My wedding isn’t until next summer but I scheduled my dress fitting for next weekend. I did this because right now the dress does not fit at all and I at least want to let the seamstress let it out. And them schedule my second or third fitting closer to the date of my wedding. I was confident in my plan but now I’m worried because other forums on here have said that they didn’t do their first fittings until about 3 months out. Am I doing this too early?

I personally think that it may be too early. My big wedding is in March 2021 and I don't have my first fitting until January 2021. I think that starting 7 months before the wedding may be a little risky.

Even though the dress doesn’t fit at all? I just would hate for 3 months to be too little time. Would you suggest the regular timeline of 3 months?

Many Seamstresses and David's Bridal pay attention to their flow of work, and want your business during a not busy time like mow when they need the work, not all in a rush closer to the busiest month. Not good for you.

I think it depends... my body does not fluctuate at all so didn’t matter when I got mine done. Also, with more lockdowns on the horizon, I would start early. My alterations were delayed 2 months due to covid.

Of course she did lol Some tend to do that, probably more so now that Covid is probably affecting their business. And I see you went to David's Bridal, their website tells you to make your appointment as soon as you get your dress lol. I would wait until at least next year

It is only a couple hours work, whenever you do it. What if you get the virus, feel too miserable to eat much for weeks, then recover happy, healthy, and 22 pounds smaller. Or you do the alterations, then a winter of covid and bad weather, and you gain weight? And cannot go the rest of the way to fit,so you get a dress that does not fit that cannot be done further, already paid $150, and now need to buy a new dress? And because you altered the dress, you won't get much on resale?
Leave it as is til 6-8 weeks always, except the busiest months when you go to the seamstress at 12 weeks.
    What dress did you get?

Can you tell me the busy months? The dress I got was the sample dress because every other dress in that style was 00-04 and that’s wayyy too small for me to take to Amy seamstress lol the sample size was one size smaller than I normally wear. It’s a fit and flare dress so the hips part is what i can’t fit

I think waiting until April/May will be more than enough time for the alterations.

Yes, I think so. The body can change within 8 weels. Heck! I lost 12lbs in eight weeks.

The first busy monthafter winter isay. Dresses for Ju e, July, August and September should allow 3 months if their dress is already in, and most salons will give out dresses at leSt 6 weeks. you might want to look at ads and look around for a seamstress not at David's Bridal. Like their sales service, their alterations are sometimes excellent, but many stores are terrible, overcharge by describing the hardest way to do something that can be done easily another way. Like, with a scalloped lacy hem, they will refuse it, or chop off what is too long, instead of taking the skirt up, at the waistline seem. Be ause they did not know how, and how easy? Or because the shop estimates time and you better not cut their earnings? They have a bad rep amo g Seamstresses I know, for things done badly, that then get brought in to be fixed. A lot of alterations take little time in hours to do the work. Sometimes they will order material to match your dress, 15 minutes. And when it comes in in 3 weeks, or they go get it, work for 2-4 hours, done. They are often not working steadily on a dress, but waiting a week to shop for this thread, those special clasps or zippers. The actual sewing is the least of it.

I did my first fitting 3 months out.
However, in your case, I don’t think it’s a terrible idea to go this early. I’ve never heard of a seamstress being able to let a dress out an entire size. So at least if she’s unable to alter it to fit you, you will have enough time to purchase a new one.
