Too old for a veil?

Dianne, on May 18, 2011 at 12:37 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 20

Ok, it's not my first wedding, but I don't think at 51 I should wear a veil. I would however love to have one just at the back of my head going down the back of my gown for part of the day, stupid idea?? I'm not trying to recapture my youth, I've learned too much in life to want to go back there!

OT- Is there something I'm missing here, I thought you had decided to part ways with your FH because he had given you an ultimatum related to your children? I may have missed the update and just saw the initial few pages of the post, but I thought you had come to the hard decision of leaving this man?

Back on topic: I don't think anyone is too old to wear some sort of veil, wear whatever it is that makes you feel good and like a bride! You only get one opportunity in life where you can wear one, so if you want to, DO it!! Smiley smile

Wear what makes you happy here is a pic of my Aunt in her mid 50's at her wedding. She also took her veil off after a bit.

hell, *I* plan on taking mine off after the ceremony

Veils are not just for young women, nor just for maidens, nor just for first-time brides! You only have to attend an ultra-conservative Roman Catholic Mass, or an Eastern Orthodox Divine Liturgy, stuffed with devout little old grandmothers wearing the century-old mantillas and chapel caps that they inherited from *their* equally-venerable grandmothers, to realize that.

A veil is a sign of modesty, that's all, regardless of the age or experience of the bride. I've seen plenty of immodest-looking twenty-somethings (typically in Demetrios bridal advertisements) on whom a veil looks a great deal sillier than it does on a kind and decent woman in her fifties.

I am actually not a fan of veils, but I don't believe age has any restrictions! If you like veils, if you like the way you look with it, go for it!

Birdcage veils are about the only ones I actually like.. FH wants to see me with a regular bridal veil though so... what my baby want, my baby get Smiley winking

Rule of thumb- your day, your way! (and yes I see the hypocrosy here lol)

I think you can try a veil if you wanna very much. After all, veils have nothing to do with ages or experiences.Just wear it.You'll be a very beautiful bride.

MrsMurdie - yes he gave me an ultimatum about my kids, then I dragged him to a therapy appt one of my kids had and the therapists (yes plural) explained things to him the way things are with my kids and why they are the way they are, things I didn't even realize too - he accepted the information, begged me to forgive him for his bad behavior, and we continue in therapy as a family now. This too shall pass, no one is perfect, I am very forgiving and heck, I love the man. We have 79 days left before becoming man and wife!

I hate veils, but have considered wearing a shower cap. lolol

Seriously, go for it Diane. While it is not your first wedding, it is the first time you are marrying him. Smiley smile Those are words of wisdom from my deceased best friend and sister. God bless her soul!

P.S. We have actually joked about my putting one on. It is a long story, but group rides in Vermont, I was late to hop on the back of the bike and our ride captain gave me some crap. The next day, I was in full leather and wearing a shower cap. He has never teased me again, altough there are some really interesting pics being shared.

Lol Carole!! Now those pics I want to see!

He doesn't think I should wear a veil b/c it's a 2-3 min civil ceremony, but heck, I want to be a BRIDE! Just one more "surprise" for him to see on the big day

I’m going to be celebrating 30years of marriage to the love of my life. We never had a wedding. He’s my 2nd marriage and I’m his first wife. We decided to have a full blown wedding, reception and all. I’m wearing a wedding dress not sure about a veil yet. It depends on how it looks.
Just to let everyone know, I’m going to be 65 on that day!

I am getting married in October. This will be my second marriage. My first marriage did not feel very romantic. I will be 72 and found the perfect dress and found a catherdal veil. Am I too old for the veil? My fiance and I are trying to make the wedding very romantic since it will be the last marriage for the both of us.
