Top heavy rings.

MrsPope, on March 29, 2016 at 1:07 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 27

Hello all!!

This isn't a "who has the bigger ring" post lol.

My issue is the top part of my ring sticks out which makes it easy for me to knock it against everything!!! I love my ring, which is why I do not want to change it but this is the second time I've had to drop it off for repairs. It usually takes a couple of days for them to get it back to me, and I hate being without it. Does anyone else have this issue? Or any solutions?

I'm extremely clumsy, so I have many nightmares of this happening to my ring! I just have to be more careful, wear gloves over it if possible. I take it off when washing dishes or doing other "hazardous" activities lol, like going to the gym.

Maybe the other ladies have more tips. Smiley smile ETA: Sorry for the blurry pic! It's just to show the thickness anyway lol.

I would suggest getting your setting reinforced. My ring sits pretty high and while I've knocked against a lot of things (including taking out a chunk of drywall with it while moving) I've never had to have it repaired. My mother's ring also sits a little high and (after 30 years) needs to have the setting replaced with a stronger metal which apparently isn't uncommon. I would consider looking into that.

I don't wear my ring to work or when I clean the house. I also have the same fears as you:

Mine isn't "top heavy" but its an opal which can be very fragile if not taken care of properly.... We had the jeweler adjust the prongs and setting to that it is hugged more uniform around the circumference and he actually made the prongs thinker in profile so that any knocks would hit the metal first before impacting the stone.

    ETA: Words and auto-correct.

Oh!! I didn't even think of that! I'm going to call him this evening to see if that's an option for my ring.

I usually take mine off when I'm cleaning and doing others things, even when I'm sleeping because I usually sleep on my hands. I have such bad luck with this!!

Hmm...I've only had my ring for a couple of weeks now, and my issue is more with it spinning around a ton - like when I'm driving the stone just falls down instantly. My finger's probably more Iike a 4.5 but my ring is a 4.75 to fit over my big fat knuckle. But also because passing it over my knuckle is so unpleasant, I tend to just wear it all the time so far.

I am a huge klutz too so should be wary of all these things!

@Mrs. T-to-be- I think our ring sizes fluctuate slightly with the temperature. When it's cold, my ring size is smaller. I had that issue too and try to turn the AC vents away from my hand when driving!

@mrs T the only thing I told FH I definitely knew I wanted was the European band because of the spinning issue. It still spins a little bit but not all the way around.

@Nicole - Yes, the driving thing was especially bad - I wasn't even cold and it was doing that. I went back to the jewelry store last Friday to order my wedding band and even with being warm from walking 15 minutes from my office to the jewelry district two of the employees were like "why does it fit like that?" Then they saw me struggle with the knuckle. I don't think I'm to the point where I need the hinge thing - he suggested I gain weight :p. They had just made one for an older woman whose knuckles had swollen from arthritis - her finger size was 7 but her knuckle was 11!

Here's a pic of mine. I also have the spinning issue sometimes which causes me to hit it on door knobs and so on.

Yep. I am always scratching things with mine. I just don't wear it instead the house, other than that I don't do much work with my hands other than at the gym. I am currently looking for a faux e-ring to wear at the gym and when we go on vacations. I love your nails in the pic BTW. Mrs. Pope where you been?

Mrs. Pope... your ring is beautiful!

I tried a variety of settings before landing on what I did... unfortunately, I'm going to be replacing it with another E-ring soon because of surface scratches (I should know better, but I really really REALLY wanted the Tanzanite). Mine does sit high - but not THAT high, and while that may account for some of the scratches - its just too soft. All the pretty rings!!!!

Look into good insurance and always, always, ALWAYS take your ring to your jeweler for checkup/cleaning every 6 months. No joke.

I've had this problem. It might be hard to see but my ring is bigger and I see to smack it on everything. I'm just happy I haven't broken it yet.

I actually knocked the whole top setting off kilter at one point. They took it back and reinforced it free of charge since apparently they didn't do a good job.

I just take mine off a lot. I only wear it when I leave the house and never our side in the field or on my motorcycle. Ever. No gym. No traveling.

I bought a smaller nugget ring to wear in harsher situations. Makes me feel a lot better.

Mine isn't huge and I take it off for all hazardous activities but when I dropped it at the jeweler for him to make my wedding band, he found that two stones were loose (after ~1.5 years of wear). He recommended bringing it in once a year for a routine checkup.

I have the same issue. I worked at Whole Foods market in the past and I would knock it all the time. Literally almost rips my finger off every time I hit it.
