Traditions and Superstitions- is this true?

FutureMrsDeVito, on September 5, 2018 at 7:59 PM Posted in Planning 0 22
So, I must say, for the last year and a half or so that I've been on WW, I really have managed to miss most of the "wedding superstitions" posts...

    Sorry, got cut off...

My sister texted me yesterday saying that it's a tradition that the MOB is supposed to buy lingerie for the bride for a shower gift?? Is this true?? Are there other weird superstitions you guys have heard??

I’ve never seen that or heard of that and I’ve been to over 15 showers. I’ve seen a lingerie shower with the bridesmaids but that’s it!

I haven't heard that this is a superstition, but my mom did buy both of my sisters lingerie for their shower gifts. So maybe!

One superstition I heard, which really makes no sense to me, was that it's bad luck to wear any other rings other than your engagement ring on your wedding day.

I haven’t heard of that one. I’m pretty superstitious (I’m Irish, lol) and I’ve heard a lot of other ones, such as you shouldn’t get married in May, should carry a horseshoe (pointing up so the luck doesn’t run out!) and that guests shouldn’t wear green!

That being said, the only superstition I’m adhering to is not letting FH see me in my dress before the ceremony.

I have NEVER heard of that!

    Huh.

I have heard of the Something Old/New/Blue/Shoe thing and the not seeing each other before the wedding.

I just did a quick search and this is what I have found-- which I didn't know!

-Good luck if there is rain on your wedding day

    -Knives as wedding gifts

-Carrying the Bride Over the Threshold

-A Spider On Your Wedding Dress

-Using Your Married Name Before the Wedding

-Crossing a Nun or Monk's Path

    -Ringing Bells

    -Breaking Glass

    -Crying on Your Wedding Day

We did a series of wedding superstition posts a while back (starting with Wedding Superstitions! How superstitious are you? ), but that's one I haven't heard before!

So I’ve never heard this but my mom was JUST talking about how she’s going to buy me lingerie for the shower my FMIL is hosting (My FH is from another state so we’re doing a couple’s shower for people in his area) but that she probably shouldn’t because it might be weird 😂

So I was a little worried when I googled crossing the path of a nun and it came up on a bad luck list, since one of FH's aunts is a nun and is invited lol. But then I saw that it would lead to a barren womb and I'm good because we don't want kids anyways lol. I haven't even heard of the MOB lingerie tradition, but my moh did just tell me her mom got her wedding night lingerie when I was telling her my boss's boss said she might get me a nightgown for the night of and I was telling her I was wondering how scandalous it might be lol.

My mom told me that lingerie was a traditional shower gift and It wouldn't be surprising if I got some. But she didn't say specifically from her. She was surprised/upset when i told her I didn't want any/didn't think that was an appropriate shower gift.

My mom told us (I have 4 sisters) that her mom bought her her lingerie for their wedding night but had no issue with me saying that I would be horribly embarrassed by that and wouldnt be able to wear it. I also dont think it is an appropriate gift from anyone so wouldnt be happy getting it at all.

I just had to look up most of the other ones listed - I knew the horseshoe and the bells (I'm also Irish) but not the rest. I think I will be rethinking the knives on the registry and just using any gift cards to buy them for myself.

I hate that not seeing your FH until the wedding.

He calms me down. I want to see him before walking down the aisle.

I had never heard of the lingerie for a shower gift before, that is until my bridal shower. My grandmother bought me lingerie for my wedding night, and insisted I held it up to show everyone. (We're not having a bridal party, so she figured she would get it for me in place of a MOH) I was soo embarrassed!

Oh my gosh I'm cracking up!!! I've never heard of the MOB lingerie superstition - I definitely think that's something you can skip! Smiley shame I think I'd die of embarrassment if my MIL bought me lingerie!

The 'don't give knives as a wedding gift' superstition is also pretty new to me! I feel bad because I've definitely bought people knives before!

I love learning about traditions and superstitions! My FW is from Puerto Rico and in their culture, it's tradition for the MOH to pay for the wedding cake. I'm from Louisiana and in our culture, if a younger sibling gets married before the older ones, the older ones have to dance with a broom at the wedding. It's usually pretty entertaining!

Apparently you can still give knives you just need to include a penny for them to give back to you so that they technically "bought" it and therefore not bad luck.
