Traditions

Whitney, on October 10, 2016 at 10:52 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 32

Just for fun...

What are some of your family wedding traditions??

For one of my family wedding traditions at the end of the ceremony the bride and groom do not walk hand in hand down the aisle, instead the bride gets into a wheelbarrow the brides parents have gifted them and the groom wheelbarrows the bride down the aisle and to the reception space. So my family usually tries to keep the ceremony and reception pretty close in distance. The record is 3 miles in my "small" hometown, it was pretty epic, so I hear, I was only about 2 when it happened.

I'm so excited to take my short ride in the wheelbarrow

That would be super cool to start the tradition!

    But....why?

Seriously that's a new one for me. So what does that signify? I can't imagine getting into a wheelbarrow with my beautiful gown and heels.

If my family had any traditions I'm not following them.

It's not like its a dirty used wheelbarrow. It's a band new clean wheelbarrow. It's a super old tradition, I never really asked "why", it's something everyone in my family has grown up seeing, I guess I've never thought about questioning it.

I think I'll ask though.... if I get an answer I'll let you know.

I figured it wasn't dirty. That would be ridiculous. But it seems rather uncomfortable. Yea...I find that if I'm going to follow a tradition, I would want to know what it signifies. I question everything (mostly).

    Looking forward to the answer.

My first thought was literally, "What if your dress gets caught on a bolt and rips?!"

My next one was, "How does that work with a DW?"

My third was where I got to the "Why??"

Seems like there's a story behind your tradition OP! lol

FH's traditions come from his Scottish side, but we most likely won't be following any of them despite his nonnie making her thoughts clear...You can't get married in May or October and March isn't that great either. You have to begin the ceremony on the downswing of the clock and be wed before the upswing. (I'm pretty sure it's the minute hand to look at.) I'm also fairly certain there's a rhyme about what flowers to choose too, but I don't remember.

My family doesn't really have any traditions unless partying it up counts Smiley smile

It's supposed to signify a strong and hard working man carrying away his bride.

and there will be a pillow to sit on to help with comfort, and it's only a short distance usually.

Whitney...... I sure hope I would be able to afford a videographer JUST for the part of me Getting out of the wheelbarrow ... lol I used to get in them as a teen just playing around (grew up on a farm) and it can be quite entertaining lol that's funny....

Unfortunately... the dollar dance.... is something my family does.. I'm half Mexican... my mom asked if I would be doing it but I told her no right off the bat and she was cool with it.. other than that no other traditions that's I know of :/

Lela, I am actually SUPER nervous about getting out of the wheelbarrow, but I'm sure my family is going to help me out.

I feel you on that one, I come from a Mexican heritage as well, and unfortunately my mom wont compromise with me on the dollar dance Smiley sad I'm not gonna stop trying though.
