Transferring Website Domain Name

Before speaking to me my fiancé bought our website name through wedding wire. Wedding wire’s website tool is pretty subpar and we’ve decided to build our own website on Square space. Square space (and every other website builder) allows you to transfer or link your previously purchased domain to them so the domain is redirected to the squares space site. There are a few steps that need to be followed including getting an authorization/transfer code from the current domain provider. I reached out to wedding wire and they said “they’re unable to transfer or release domains” at this time. This sounds pretty ridiculous. Has anyone else had to do this/tried to to this?

    From a legal perspective their hands are tied--we simply don't have proof that we're the domain owner. I'm a lawyer and I get their perspective. It could be anyone asking them to transfer a domain name. That being said, they certainly don't have to be rude about it!

    In January 2020, I purchased a domain name via WeddingWire. This purchase is set to expire on January 9, 2021.


    I had planned to renew my purchase of this domain name for another year and set up domain forwarding to a new hosting provider. A Customer Services representative from domain registrar EuroDNS explained that both of these requests had to be completed by reseller Wedding Planner SL, whose parent organization is WeddingWire.


    Unfortunately, WeddingWire Support was unable to provide sufficient instruction on domain renewal or guide me through the process. In addition, WeddingWire is unwilling to forward my domain to a new hosting provider, because its development team does not have the capability to do so, a limitation set in place by Wedding Planner SL. Therefore, I submitted a request to attain management of the domain name.


    I have not received a response from Wedding Planner SL, and my purchase expires in four days. Also, I don't know if I can re-purchase the domain after it expires, because Wedding Planner SL owns the rights to this domain through next year...

    Wedding wire was absolutely useless in trying to get this resolved. They can absolutely do it if they wanted to—they just don’t want to put in the energy or effort to help facilitate the process. They probably somehow make money off of each domain name. End up having to buy a different domain through square space and built my own website on that platform instead.

    I gave up trying! If I remember correctly I think we just tweaked our domain name and started over. It’s been 2 years since my original post so they may have the option now but you’d want to check directly with wedding wire and see what they say! Good luck!
