Traveling to Sandals in Jamaica- Zika?

Sydney, on January 11, 2018 at 1:58 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 19

I am traveling to Sandals Whitehouse in October for my honeymoon. We wanted to start trying to conceive right away, but the CDC website says to wait 6 months to start trying. Sandals website says they are Zika free because the bomb for mosquitoes twice a day. Opinions on this?

I personally wouldn't risk it if I were trying to conceive. There are so many beautiful places to visit in the world other than Sandals that don't involve a threat like Zika.

This would be a great question to ask your doctor as it pertains to medical advice.

I don't know if I would risk it. I'd either wait the 6-8 months after the trip to start trying, or move the honeymoon to a tropical location not in Zika land.

I would listen to the CDC over a resort that wants your money. Just wait 6 months to TTC if you're so set on going there.

Of course Sandals is going to say that. They want tourists to visit. Don't believe them. If you go, put off TTC until your doctor says you are in the clear.

I'd trust the CDC 100% over some claim a resort makes.

Also wouldn't want to be exposed to the pesticides in the mosquito bombs. you could be exposed at the airport or on the way to the resort as well.

I would just wait the six months after leaving the resort to TTC. A resort can make claims all they want, but it's a huge risk to take. 6 months isn't long to wait and is way better than having your child permanently affected by Zika.

Agree with Spaghetti, I wouldn't risk it. Are you adamant on Jamaica? If so, you may need to wait the stated 6months.

First, I would speak with your OBGYN. I personally wouldn’t chance it and would just wait the 6 months.

Of course they have it. Bombing doesn’t get rid of all the mosquitos. They say hat because they do not want to be affected with tourists choosing not to go.

Try bermuda or Hawaii. They are the closest warm beach like places that the US that do not have Zika.

Talk to your OBGYN, they can test you and your partner when you get home to make sure you're safe to TTC, but it's not always covered by insurance

Sandals might be free of mosquitos but that doesn't mean you can't get bitten if you step foot out of the resort. You could get bitten leaving the airport. I would take the CDC advice over the advice of Sandals, but definitely talk to your doctor

We are going to Punta Cana which also has Zika. I spoke with my doctor and she advised us to wait 6-8 months to conceive. It stays in the man for at least 6 months and even though he may not show symptoms, he still could be carrying it. Trust your doctor and just wait a little longer. Enjoy the time with just your husband and the six months will fly by!

I took a microbiology course last year and the professor said that as long as you use a bug repellent with deet you shoud be fine.

I was in Jamaica in December 2016 and I didn't see one mosquito- I didn't stay at a sandals but I'm sure it's very similar.

Change to Sandals Bahamas which is off the CDC list or wait 6 months. I just returned from Sandals Jamaica and was bit several times. I used a repellant with deet, a repellant fan clip with deet, and a natural one because we were still getting bit. Their advertisement gives you a false sense of security unfortunately.
