Travelling abroad after wedding

Nicole, on February 4, 2022 at 8:10 AM Posted in Honeymoon 2 7

Hello Everyone!

We are getting married March 19th, 2022! So soooon!! We are planning our honeymoon for Iceland! But I am concerned with traveling so close to the wedding because of the name change. We plan to sign the marriage license on the wedding day, but would you all advise holding off on the name change until after we return from our trip? My passport is current and has my current name now so I am worried if I change the name so close to the trip, it will cause some disruption. If anyone has any experience with this or could offer any guidance I would greatly appreciate it! Happy Planning to all! Smiley heart

When is your trip? I would probably just wait until you’re back from your trip to change your name if the wedding is close to when you’ll be leaving.

That's what I'm thinking too! it'll just be safer that way. We are leaving for the trip probably the Wednesday after the wedding, so not even a week later. And it will only be for a week, so I can just take care of the name change when I get back! Thank you for responding so quickly!

Wait until after the trip. Given you are leaving so soon after your wedding, you literally do not have time to change your name before then. It took about a week for me to get my new social security card (and I had gone to the social security office in person).

Yes, don’t start then name change until after you return. Absolutely no harm in waiting. And it’s super important to have your passport in your legal name and matching any flight tickets, so not something to mess with!

Leaving that soon you may not even be able to start the process anyway! We didn’t have our marriage certificate back until a couple weeks after the wedding. I know it varies by state but for us it was us and officiant sign license on wedding day, officiant mails it off to be registered by the state, then certificate comes back— and nothing in the name change process could start until we had that certificate!

I would wait as well. No sense causing confusion! If you want to use your new name, you can probably ask the hotel to refer to you as Mrs. So &So because you’re honeymooning and I’m sure they’ll happily accommodate you!
