Trivia at wedding

bellamae, on March 9, 2016 at 7:46 PM Posted in Planning 1 12

FH and I have been going to trivia night on Monday nights at a bar near us since we started dating. Our DJ for our wedding is the trivia host (he owns his own company and also does weddings, too!)

When we first got engaged and started planning we really wanted to incorporate trivia into our reception.

..Maybe have each table as a trivia team and play a round. Now that we are actually planning, I don't know if this would even work or if guests would enjoy it.

My question: is this a bad idea? Would you enjoy it as a guest? Any suggestions on how to successfully incorporate it?

I am terrible at trivia and would prefer drinks, dancing and socializing. You know your crowd best though.

I think it sounds like a fun idea in theory, but, as a guest, I would honestly hate it. Sorry, I just want to dance, people watch, and most importantly eat.

If you're doing buffet style, you could have the table that gets the question right be the one who gets to get food.

Other than that, I don't know if I would enjoy this as a guest...

I wouldn't be into this. Maybe you could do fun trivia facts about you and FH on each table instead?

Save it for the pub. I love trivia, but playing it at a wedding is a bit too self-indulgent for an already self-indulgent event. I don't know that anyone should be harangued into someone else's hobby just to achieve some higher-level sentimentality.

Thanks everyone! It seemed like a good idea at first but I want our guests to have a good time.

I have been looking into incorporating trivia as well. We we considering doing trivia instead of the glasses clink. If you want the bride and groom to kiss, come up and ask us a trivia question.

At his rehearsal dinner, my brother had trivia questions based on their relationship (e.g. what was their first date, on what date did he propose, etc.) and everyone had a blast. BUT I think it worked mostly because a number of factors that may not be present in every situation. It was a casual, lighthearted Wild Western-themed buffet in a rustic event space. It was after dinner so people had a chance to chat and eat their food first. The bride and groom had been together for a long, long time (since high school) and many of the guests had known them that long, so there was a lot of material for Trivia. Whoever the host is would also need to be a good speaker and have a good sense of humor. So, in this case, I think it worked well but could see it being very awkward in a lot of situations, particularly at the actual wedding reception.

My good friend had trivia at her wedding, each table competed against each other and it was super fun, except people totally cheated by just using their phones to look the answers up. However she didn't have a big dancing crowd and it was an afternoon wedding.

I think it sounds fun but I'd do it during cocktail hour if you plan on taking pictures after the ceremony but before the reception to help guests pass time.

I would love it personally. We considered doing something similar but just didn't have the time in the schedule.
