Trouble Visualizing the Venue

Faith, on July 15, 2021 at 9:34 AM Posted in Planning 0 18

Hi everyone! I haven't posted before, so I hope this is an okay topic. My fiance and I found a venue in our town that we think will work for both our ceremony and reception. It's inexpensive, open to all of our ideas, and is pretty unique (half of it is a theater and the other half is a reception hall). The ceremony section I can easily get behind, because it's already mostly done, but the reception space is not the best. It's a little outdated, and it kind of has a basement-y feel. They've had weddings there before, but it's not the primary use of the space so there aren't any pictures I can look at.

My issue is that I can't visualize it. There's so much we've talked about doing to make it look beautiful and romantic, and everyone else can see it except me. I always struggle making decisions, but I feel frozen on this one. I don't know how to say yes to this place when I'm worried that it won't turn out the way we're hoping for.

Basically, if anyone has any tips on either decision making or seeing past what is in front of you, I'd really appreciate it! Thanks Smiley heart

Hello ! DO you have any pictures of the place ? Is it amongst weddingwire wendors ? You can find some pictures from other weddings maybe ? They don't have it themselves there ?

Hi! They don't have a weddingwire account unfortunately. I live in a pretty small town, and this place likes it that way. The weddings they've had they don't post pictures of. I have a couple pictures I took when we toured it though! (Deep apologies for the blurriness of the first pic! The second balcony made me a little off-center!) The ceremony space I think we could make really pretty relatively easily by closing off the back stage, adding decorations, and a runner. The reception space is a little more barebones. I think this is an AWESOME idea and space! Im actually a little jealous! haha! Very creative and inexpensive is perfect in my book! You can put lipstick on anything. Do you have a wedding planner? A artistic creative person who can put together both you and your FH likes and wants can make this space amazing! What kind of theme are you going with? Are you going fancy? Rustic? Some nice linen, lights, candles go a long way! Also trust in your friends who are saying they can visualize it. Do you have other options that you're looking at too? How do those measure up to this one?

Make a pro and con list. put it all down in writing. Sometimes getting it all out on paper makes it look less confusing. Were having our reception at the Moose Lodge. Its about the fun you have with the people you love, not how fancy the location is. All that crap really doesnt matter.

Oh thank you! Usually I'm all for creative and inexpensive, but I guess I'm nervous about pulling it off. We're planning everything ourselves, but we have a lot of creative friends/family. The ideas we've had so far for the reception is to kind of drap sheer or white fabric and fairy lights across the ceiling to cover the panels and then wrap fairy lights around the columns.
The other options are more traditional wedding venues and they're absolutely beautiful. The downside is that they're literally several thousand dollars more 😳

This is a good idea! I'm just really overwhelmed with it all so maybe seeing it will help. My sister had her reception at a Moose Lodge and it looked beautiful too. You're definitely right and I need to remind myself of that!!

Go look at various other venues on pinterest - doesn’t matter where they are - that have the same sort of feel. Like the pillars, ceiling length, and see what they’ve done. I bet there are some really great ways to dress it up.

My husband has trouble visualizing things based on concept, so I developed a habit of making these (admittedly slightly ridiculous) collages to help him actually see what I was visualizing. This one isn’t my best work and not necessarily your vision, but it gives you an idea of what I mean Trouble Visualizing the Venue 3

And why spend several thousands more? When the time spent with your people is what is going to matter? I'm so frugal, so I'd always go with the cheap place. As long as you have head room, you can totally drape sheer tulle or fabric across the ceiling and that is what peoples eyes will go to. Some crisp white linens, pretty centerpieces...what else do ya need!?!? I have a feeling that its going to be gorgeous! Just plan for someone who knows what they are doing to decorate it! Instead of several thousands more, hire someone for a couple hundred to make it beautiful! Honestly, our hall is WAAAY more tacky than this! Were putting lipstick on a Moose! haha!

It's a really nice space aside from the panels which can easily be made nicer with some drapery and twinkle lights, like you said. I found these on pinterest that look a little similar and shows how much draping can do! You don't even need to go this extravagant if you didn't want to, but maybe it will help visualize it.

This is amazing! Thank you so much! I've been trying to draw what it would look like, but it's not something I would say I'm good at. This is so cool to look at and get a feel for what it would be like!

You're exactly right in terms of spending time. Staying frugal is such a big deal for me, but I got so scared that I couldn't do it and make it pretty. This thread has made me feel so much better! I bet your hall is also going to look fantastic though! You have some great ideas so I can't imagine it wouldn't be!

I actually have one of these saved on my Pinterest account! I think you're right that covering the panels is the biggest issue. My depth perception is definitely off, so I'll need to get my fiance or someone to figure out how much headspace we have to work with! Thanks for this inspiration!

Oh...and hire to your weakness, and delegate!

I’m sure there are probably better suited / more sophisticated tools, but I just use the (free) app Pic Collage on my phone.
